Work have decided that if I want one, they will give me one of these laptops.

There are some conditions, but nothing too serious.

What I was wondering was can a laptop be run from a car cigarette lighter socket?

The DVD player would make ideal entertainment material for the kids on the way to France later this year.

Yes it can. Try expansys.co.uk or Compaq themselves.
Alternatively you can buy an invertor, a small transformer thingy that gives you 240v in your car. (£50ish)
