Went out for a steak this afternoon. Spent it on that (well, put it towards it more like).

Aye. Thought about a fillet, but by the time they cooked it, it would probably be the size of a 50p coin. Best steak I ever had was in New York. Fillet I think it was. No fat, just a huge lump of soft tender flame grilled steak with enough fries to sink a battleship. Was fairly expensive, but a lot cheaper than if I ordered the equivalent over here. Not had steak for ages, so really enjoyed it.

If you have it cooked properly (so hardly at all), then it doesn't shrink. And you still get blood. Bonus.

I'm sure I saw on QI that the red stuff that comes out of a steak isn't actually blood - but some protein or something like that.

I'm sure one of the Internet Elders can confirm / deny

Everyone knows the only way to eat steak is medium-rare at a cheap resturant and rare at a good one.

At a good resteraunt I always go medium rare. At one I'm not sure about medium.

New Steak place just opened up where I live. must try it out some night soon!

Only chickens and pigs are better cooked than raw.

Spot on, rare 28 day or longer matured is soft as butter and the flavour is immense. As you said though, must be a good place where it is hung and handled properly.

There's an Argentinian steak house on the South Lambeth Rd - supposed to be unbelievably awesome. Apparently when they're not trying to invade the Falklands, the Argies know a thing or two about raising good beef.

If I want blue steak, I'll empty a bic biro over it. Medium for me.
