True, the start can be a bit sticky but very, very well worth it.

The SIlmarillion is a drag to start , but once the tales begin about Finrod etc etc it gets interesting

Aye...the book starts a bit slow, but picks up later on. If you look at the scale of the timeline and number of chars, the Silmarillion is a very simplified version of a grand tale, but the tale as it is, is none the less written extremely well. I loved the book. I even think that if some of the stories in Silmarillion had been written in the same detail as LotR, then they would be just as good, if not better..

They cut him out because he had nothing to add to the story.... wasnt significant enough.

It is the third film in the Lord of the Rings trilogy, therefore LOTR 3.

Some people need to lighten up.

I don't think that name is official, is it? It's not in any of the Tolkien books, and it's not in the Encyclopedia or Arda?

Silmarillion is imo a history book. It tells about how the world where LotR plays in was created and about the history of the world. The start is rather boring and later on it tells more stories and it becomes more fun to read.

I would only recommend it if you are interested in the world of the LotR. As who Sauron actually was, who Gandalf + Saruman + the other wizards were, why the elfs go back to the west, etc. As otherwise you probably wont get through the start. I enjoyed reading it, but imo it is more designed as explanation of the world behind LotR+Hobbits(+other stories?) than as a great book itself.

For Thorarin and lumikki from The Encyclopedia of Arda :

(...)This may come as a surprise if you've come across one of the many sources that list a set of names of the other eight: Murazor (the Witch-king himself), Dwar, Ji Indur, Akhorahil, Hoarmurath, Adunaphel, Ren and Uvatha. These names are common across the Web, and often have detailed biographies to go with them. They're also consistent with what Tolkien had to say about the origins of the Nazgûl: in the Akallabêth it is stated '...among those whom he ensnared with the Nine Rings three were great lords of Númenórean race', and indeed three of these names are Númenórean in form: Murazor, Akhorahil and Adunaphel.

None of these eight names, though, have their origins in Tolkien's own work. Instead, they come from a series of role-playing and trading card games produced by Iron Crown Enterprises. The names of Murazor, Dwar and the rest emerged from the unavoidable need for these games to develop and expand Tolkien's universe to meet the needs of the gaming fraternity. The games' popularity accounts for the regular appearance of the names, to the extent that they're now frequently presented as the 'true' names of the remaining eight Nazgûl. (...)

so technically you could call the witchking Angmar, but as he wasnt king of Angmar for a long period (675 years) and after losing Angmar he sort of becomes king of minas morgul. So using the name Murazor or witchking would be better (Murazor being his widely acknowledged name and witchking his title (or how you want to call it)

dont read silmarillion. its not worth the time and effort. I myself love the LOTR triology but find Silmarillion rather weird. there are other better books about the Tolkiens Midgard... most of them, like silmarillion is based upon Tolkiens notes that his son has written down and published with commentaries. interesting to read if you are a fan of the books. but for some reason I found silmarillion utterly boring and strange. dont remember why though... might be time to read it again :p

think the problem is its basically 5-6 stories in 1 book that dont really join up till later on gets a bit confusing rly but still a great book worth reading

nerf me i failed english (hence no grammar used)
