Lost in lag world.

I bow down to the forums wisdom and beg for guidance.

The last couple of nights playing CS 1.3, Ive been swampped by HUGE lag spikes the size of church steeples, Christ I even got a flushentity before Id chosen my team!!. So, being a regular visitor to this forum, and having read and given advice, I attempted to remedy this fault.

First off, I changed ISPs, no good, then I tried another, no different. I then went for a clean install of CS (retail), on a newly formatted (partition of) HD, no different. So I asked BT to test my line, that must be it I thaught, but hell no. Running out of ideas, I decided to remove and reinstall my modem, with new up-to-date drivers, and hey presto..........no fookin difference.

Now bearing in mind that until a couple of days ago I was a regular 180 pinger (not ideal, but living where I do, and only connecting at 40kbps due to the very long line, its acceptable and quite playable) Has anybody got any sensible solutions. Please dont tell me to go and get ADSL or ISDN, cos my phone line wont support it., and NTL dare not adventure this far into the countryside.

Ive listed my system below for reference, if its any help.

Pentium II 350
384 pc133 sdram
Jetway tnt2 grphx
Maxtor 15gig 5200 HD
Diamond SuperExpress internal modem.

I could really do with some help here fellas.

Thanks.

Its probably just problems with ISP's, both blueyonder and BT have been royalled bjorked the last few days, some otehr smaller ISP's had problems (based on moaning in irc).

Give it a few days to settle down, and hope it goes away :)

Ive previously tweaked my config, using all the links ever posted, but I dont see why this should have suddenly changed. In fact........it hasnt (just checked)
Whats most likley to cause the flushentity, which bit is best to tweak? Ive played with cmdrate, updaterate, rate etc. but it dont seem to get any better.

Ping and Lagspikes are also effected by the quality of your phone line and how close you are to your telephone exchange :p

Dunno about all you other modemmers but I am v happy with my cheapie freeserve evenings and weekends which provides me with a stable 190 ping.

Unlike others 1.3 has actually lowered my ping and made me a whole lot better. The headshots thing has made getting 20->30 frags per level piss easy even 4 meh lowly modem.

then again low ping would b better:

/me is gonna wait 4 cable. . . . and wait . . . and wait . . . and wait . . . and wait . . . and wait . . . and wait . . . and wait . . . and wait . . . and wait . . . and wait . . . and wait . . . and wait . . . and wait . . . and wait . . . and wait

Yes my phone line stretches from the exchange, a 1/4 million miles away to my house, via the whole of Lincolnshire. But, you see, the problem lies in the fact that, up until a couple of days ago I was steady at 180!!

I tried a different modem last night, a soft modem, which although raised my ping to about 330, at least it was steady, no spiking. I suspect that my Supraexpress is goosed.

/me trawls through the net for cheap external modem.
