The plot sounds a bit farfetched, but have to take a peek, got nothing better to do.

Yep, but its gotta be better than Come Dancing (the most useless programme since someone suggested Jade Goody host the Bollywood Awards ceremony)

I've read the book and I prefer the movie really. Seems people just wanna claim the book is better because there is this rule that the book is always better than the movie

The book is good and all, but I dunno, I think Tolkien spent far far too long fleshing out everysingle tree they wandered past, the character development really isnt the most sophisticated in the world.

no...yes but! well imo the book was better but the film was unbearable for me because they made the sodding hobbits so bloody slappable. it was all "big lady diana eyes" all over the place and there was deffo something mildly homoerotic about Sam and Frodo

I have read plenty of books that were shite and the films were excellant (Jaws and Jurassic park being my top examples) I wouldn't prefer something "just" because of its format, if something is better its better.

if the hobbits wern't such drippy irritating gits then the film would probably have been a lot better, i didn't like the changes to the story that they made either though.

I think the book and the film are both good, but they are definitely different which I think is a refreshing thing.

I agree with Uara that Tolkien spent too long fleshing out perspectives that didn't need it. Then again let's remember this writing project was written essentially as a bed time story for his children and then it progressed from there, so you can see why he tried to give Middle Earth the life it had. That said I do find his prolonged ramblings and histories far too long and a very dry and stale at times - and if you think that's bad, try reading the Silmarilion like I did - now THAT was a chore.

In terms of the film, there are many discrepancies and different perspectives taken on things - which I think is a good thing because Jackson never tried to make it totally the same (a feat he couldn't really accomplish), as Ezteq says there are some bits that need addressing like the hobbits - they come across as very effeminate and at times (at least between Frodo & Sam) pseudo-homosexual. The comedy moments of Gimli are amusing but the 'let's laugh at the short bloke' idea was far too easy. Overall though I enjoyed the movies, enhanced most definitely by the special editions that actually add a lot of extra scenes, rather than the wanky 50 seconds or whatever you get with most special editions.

Imageshack is being dodgy else I'd put a piccy up of my LOTR swords. :(

What the film really proved is that everyone that reads a book gets something different out of it.

When reading a book your imagination has to fill in everything that isn't written down in exact terms, and everyone does that differently.
There's no way that you can recreate a book as a film and make it like everyone thought the book was because everyone has filled in the different bits differently. All you can do is make a film about the story you got from the book and hope people like it.

There's always going to be people yelling, the book this and the book that no matter what you do. Personally for me the film was great. I'm not even going to worry if it was better or worse than the book because for me the two things were completely different experiences.

Imageshack is working for me now, some of my LOTR swords, I haven't had a chance to put up Gimli's axe, which is signed by the actor:

The shards of Narsil limited edition, with my spirit bottles sadly empty next to it :(

There's still a few others not in the photos - Legolas's knives + sheaths, Arwen/Elrond's Hadhafang, Uruk-Hai scimitar and I'm still on the lookout for a few other things, there are several signed Theoden's sword Herugrim and I want to get hold of that. I only buy the official United Cutlery stuff, not the knock-off's. There's some good prices still out there - the centre peice sword there, the reforged Narsil (renamed as Anduril, Flame of the West) I've seen on several websites at £700-800. I paid £290, so eek!

I managed to get most of them before I had a money-sapping commitment, i.e. a kid, but I'm not giving up!! Gimli's walking axe and strider's hunting knife will be on my priority list. Just in time for the wife to say, "Oh FFS, not more of them...." :D

Legolas was just the coolest fighter in the trilogy. Loved his knife & bow work.
