Read TLOTR over summer so I hope its good. I reckon Sheelob in the third film will be something worth seeing (if she's in there)

Anyone know who's playing Aragorn (not Bean) ?

Christopher Lees playin Saruman v Ian Mc'Kellon as Gandalf so thats a good pairing. Ian Holms playing Bilbo...

...thing I'd forgotten was how disappointing the ending of the book was. You think you'll see a showdown at the end put they just chuck the ring in the pit and it kinda fizzles out...

Still ..I'll buy a ticket

the *best* fan site for the films

btw i thought the ending was 'right' after a read a lot of the other books about the first age. the point all through was that sauron couldn't be defeated face to face and he was following in the footsteps of his old master by directing his forces from a remote location that was unassailable. in fact the inconsistency in the story was him losing the ring in battle in the first place!

^^what Speccy said. but he forgets that once apon a time Sauron could take on a -more or less- humanoid form iirc. that's why the ring gets cut from his hand on the fields of Gladden by Gil galad and Elendil [once again iirc -it's been ages since I read the book]
after this, his ability to take the humanoid form is lost

Oh well done you ruined the ending for me, I must be one of the few people that read it, read the hobbit, but through no choice of my own.

actually he lost the ability to assume a normal human form during the downfall of Numenor (sp?). The form he had when he lost the ring was the one he was stuck in after that.

ah yes of course that was it :)
I really should brush up on my Sillmarillion [sp heh].
Anyhoo, there's prolly some trick to it. After all, Sauron wasn't trounced by 'just anyone' was he, and both Elendil and Gil-Galad were killed by the touch of the black hand before old firebritches croaked.
Isildur only got the ring because he was smart enough to cut it off Saurons hand with the hilt-shard of Elendil's sword, which wasn't just any old sword.
Remember that the ringwraiths couldn't be harmed with 'normal' swords either.

//edit...also iirc [and I havn't been sneakily reading up heh] wasn't it so that he lost the ability to assume forms pleasing to the eye? I seem to remember that was the reason he fell from grace and got kicked out of Numenor in the first place - because they suddenly saw him for what he was?

any 1 remember the BBC radio play of LOTR back in about 1980 ish. I bought the tapes and have started listening to them again-very good play (not that Ive listened to any other radio plays) Interestingly Ian Holm played the part of FRodo.

nah. he suceeded in all he wanted to do - ie get the Numenorians to attack the Valar. he just wasnt expecting the entire island to be sucked into the sea where his 'pleasing' form was destroyed. last heard saying as he disappeared into the maelstrom 'this sucks!' ;)

I havent read the Silmarillion yet.

What i want to see is the CGI of the big city, whats it called?
The one with 7 levels that one of the hobbits (Pippin) i think, swears loyalty to the King and joins in the army/guard.

Its after the battle for the city that Aragorn goes through the paths of the dead.

Whats the city called again? Someone tell me.

Minas Tirith, tower of the guard.
Aragorn goes through the paths of the dead to save it from the 1st ringwraith, captain of Sauron's army iirc.

Pippin swears loyalty to Denethor, who isn't king but steward, lord of Minas Tirith.
