Rand is a pussy for a reason, he doesn't want to be a hero.

Rand is a pussy for a reason, he doesn't want to be a hero.

Neither does Richard. He wants to go back home and be a ranger/farmer type. The difference is Rand doesn't want to embrace the power he's been given to save his lands.

Richard knows that by embracing the power, he can save his lands.

Talyn, I think you need to go past book 3. Rand isn't embracing power for a reason, he's been raised his entire life to believe that men with power are evil, add to that the fact he believes he is going mad, and that the power will drive him mad.

Anyway, you need to catch up, the characters in wheel of time are one thing you cannot really criticise, the endless talk of hems however.....

You can say whatever you want about Wheel of Time, but the world he creates and the characters he put there is absolutely massive. However, I cannot argue with the people that feel like a lot the books are filler. Me, on the other hand, think this is one of the great things about the series, all the little details.... And it never ends :D

I think that's why I'm not a huge fan of LotR (a weak attempt at getting back on topic :p), there was too much detail about minutae (spelling?) of the worlds.

I find Goodkinds to be more character driven, than 'world' driven, if that makes sense.

It's probably why I like 'high' fantasy, like the Dragonlance books, the various eras of the World of Darkness, Discworld and the like - it's less about the little details, and more about pushing the story along, and constant character interaction, rather than the drawn out, highly detailed worlds.

Meh, each to their own I suppose.

Then I really can't understand why you gave up on Wheel of Time, it really is more about the characters than anything else.

Well, I won't and can't argue with that, but as I'm in the middle of the story, it'd be nice to see how it turns out before starting another epic tale.

I gave up at book 3 of Wheel of Time because Rand (it was Rand, wasn't it?) is the most pathetic character I've ever discovered, I'd rather hang out with Smeagle.

So if the 'Truth' books go a bit tits up, I may jump ship and hop over to GoT. Thing is, Richard isn't a pussy like Rand, so I may stay the course...

ha, well I respect your wish and agree with you to a point. also, not reading more than one epic at once is generally a good idea hehe :)

couple counterpoints though, prolly already covered I guess. anyway, I read two SOT books before giving up. I read WOT up to and including Knife of Dreams. imo the main difference between Rand and Richard in the beginning is that the former was living at home with his dad being a farmer while the latter was a guide, and a man. also, Richard was being prepared mentally to be a wizard without his knowing as a child, whereas Rand was very likely pushing carts of cow poo about and stuff. the worst thing, is that is any mark of being a a badass, that Rand ever had to do in his life before he had to grow up was prolly shooting a rabbit with a bow, whereas Richard knew all about death and being hunted.

I could go on, but all this typing in my mobile is making me twitchy :)

I gave up on Wheel of Time at about book 6, because the gap between each book was so long I'd forgotten half of what happened, and the new books didn't offer a quick "catch-up" section to help.

I'm therefore waiting until its all done, and then I'll buy the remaining books and read the series from book 1.

I was looking to buy new books the other day, and thought "fuck it, why spend the cash when I can hardly recall all the events in songs of ice and fire (game of thrones) and wheel of time. Think I will start a massive re-read of them, before starting the malazan books again.
