Ooooooooooooooooooooooooold I know...

Just finished watching the first one, extended as I haven't seen the extra bits before, noting an extra 30 minutes of footage which were apparent throughout. I decided to look it up; theres a whole 2 hours and 4 minutes of extra stuff spread over the three movies...

Just to let you know. I haven't seen it in ages myself and thought anyone who is similar might want to know, there is a whole host of extra runtime for your viewing pleasure! It's helping me no end; from 300 to 850fps on my work now and a fully implemented, working 3d camera system, woohoo! :D

I was in Hobbiton (Matamata in New Zealand) about a month ago, and they were just getting it all ready to film The Hobbit. The Party Tree is ace :D

Leaving out Bombadil was a good thing. Freaky hippy tree-lover person :D

Aside from the section that occured in the Barrow Downs, that whole section is at odds with the rest of the story and doesn't further the plot much.

I wondered if, like The Hobbit, that was based on one of the bedtime stories JRR Tolkien used to tell his children.

Tom Bombadil would have been hard to explain, seeing as he was just about the most powerful thing in Middle Earth. His esistance and ideology, as well as not helping the Hobbits would be hard for the average audience I reckon.

I think I may be about piss off a lot of folks...

Before I make my 'outrageous' statement, I'd just like to state that I have the greatest repect for Tolkien, and his invention of the fantasy genre. Without him, there'd be no D&D.

And remember, this is all personal opinion...

Lord of the Rings is shit.

The books just drag out for eons and it's badly written. The movies are just as bad. Very pretty, but just like the books, rubbish. (I guess it's one of the few times where the movies have lived up to the books!)

I bought the first movie on the special 200 disk, 30 hours of extra footage, super special restored digital 5.1 channel stereo movie 3-D spectacular version, and then never bothered to buy the others.

Peter Jacksons best work was Bad Taste. Then he went poopy too. Just like Lucas, Jackson could have been a visionary, but then he made LotR and King Kong.

I'm not looking forward to the Hobbit (that still is Jackson, yes?).

(It's the same thing with Pink Floyd, Purple and Zepplin - I'm not a fan, but I appreciate and respect thier work as without them there would never have been 'Heavy Metal'.)

Maybe I'm mental for not liking probably the most popular books on this earth, but I do appreciate that without Tolkien we might not have Conan, D&D, Biowares epics games etc etc etc.

You are fully entitled to your opinion :)

Didn't see(besides first) in the movies.

Waited and avoided spoilers.

Never read stories etc.

Took all three extended films, turned phone off, home theatre, cumfy couch, lots of eats and drinks, saturday morning --> saturday night.

One of the best movie experiences i've had, since i knew nothing about nothing and it was loooooong.

Actually had a bit of a detatchment from reality there.

Then went to bar, got hammered and took home a pretty lady :D

I'm in agreement, LOTR was pretty badly written garbage - both books and film.

I read the books years ago as a child and enjoyed them immensely, I thought the films caught the feel of the books perfectly, though as said a fair amount was missed out, even in the extended versions. Its clearly not everyone's cup of tea but I liked them.

I think other fantasy books would probably make better films, I would love to see a couple of David Gemmell's books turned into films, it wouldn't work for most of them but one or two would be great, White Wolf, Waylander and maybe a couple of the Druss books.

Druss!!!!!!!!!

Although it would no doubt be considered a Conan remake :p

Personally I would love to see some of the Waylander stuff done.

Apparantly there's a White Wolf/World of Darkness MMO in the works, which for Vamps and Werewolves should be 'easy' enough as they have 'set' powers that do one thing and one thing only. I want to knwo how they will make Mages. Their magic is so versatile and freeform,y ou could never reproduce it in a game.

As for other fantasy, (and this may explain my lack of enjoyment for LotR) have you seen Legend of the Seeker? It's the TV version of Terry Goodkinds 'Sword of Truth' series. Now, that to me is how fantasy should be done.

Also, a little less 'fantasy' is Spartacus, with Lucy Lawless and the stupid brother bloke from the Mummy movies whose name I can't remember... It's another Rob Tapert series (Xena, Herc, Legend of the Seeker), but you can see the budget is massive compared to Xena, and the stylisation of the show is very much 'cartoony 300 style' with lots of bright red blood splattering everywhere, lots of boobies, and lots of flesh from Lucy herself. ahhh, fantasy...oops, wrong fantasy, go away, I need some... alone time!!

Yep what teedles said, very medieval theme, some fantasy elements, but they are introduced slowly. No character is unexpendable, and the character development is handled extremely well.

Basic premise is civil war between the ruling families after the King is assassinated.

By CCP, developers of EVE: Online.

If i remember correctly, this year or next out.

Be it what it may, it's certain that it's not a WoW copy as CCP are prone to do things different, even at own cost.

Atleast it's a fair assumption.

LotR blu-ray? Now?

A simple case of why 3D is going to be a seriously epic fail; we've not even got a high def format truly accepted by studios and the public.

Fuck 3D, sort HD movies/TV first, then worry about 3D after.

PS James Cameron can rim me.

Mmmm.... I will follow the Song of Ice and Fire series closely... One of the best reading experiences I have ever had. George Martin have some guts, and serious talent, to make such a series work!

I would, but I've still got 8 more Sword of Truth novels to get through. And I don't read enough as it is.

well you didn't ask, so I'll offer my opinion: the GRRM books are *much* better than Goodkind's SOT series, but hey :)

Well, I won't and can't argue with that, but as I'm in the middle of the story, it'd be nice to see how it turns out before starting another epic tale.

I gave up at book 3 of Wheel of Time because Rand (it was Rand, wasn't it?) is the most pathetic character I've ever discovered, I'd rather hang out with Smeagle.

So if the 'Truth' books go a bit tits up, I may jump ship and hop over to GoT. Thing is, Richard isn't a pussy like Rand, so I may stay the course...
