I bet EA will feel silly at the annual scumbag conference this year, they just ruined it for everyone.

I bet EA are licking Disneys arse at the moment because rumour has it that it was Disney that told them to pull the plug on loot boxes as it was "damaging the star wars brand"

It's a complicated issue but in a full price game you shouldn't have to buy loot boxes to compete, I honestly don't mind it in free to play games if its not to extreme, lol/hearthstone etc...

I can agree with that. If EA GAVE BF2 away for free, they'd be somewhat ok with what they were doing lootbox wise.. but they were charging like £60 for it? or some shit.

I'd also imagine they'd make a great deal more money as well.

Look at Dota/CS - they make a fortune, DOTA is free, CS is like £10.

Taking the piss though and the customers are put right off.

GW2 is another great example of in game cosmetic bonuses.

It wouldn't be a problem if it weren't for the idiots buying them. Always a market for something as long as there are idiots.

Apparently according to Jim sterling Sweden is also investigating the gambling properties of loot boxes and is said to share the same views as Belgium do. Can't find a source i trust on it though.

The "idiots" don't know better, the publishers do. So it's still the publishers fault..

No. They are in it to make money, and answer to the shareholders. Parents/politicians responsibility here tbh.

Where as I agree they are in it to make money, they're expoiting children with gambling, the only reason they have got away with it for so long is because its not legally classified as gambling (yet), introducing children to gambling through gaming is a terrible thing and morally wrong in every aspect. The publishers should have absolutely known better.

So therefore by the same logic all the other games that do the harmless cosmetic loot boxes are also exploiting children?

Bollocks.

Absolute bollocks.

If you can't control how your kid uses YOUR money online then its YOUR fault.

Vote with your wallet ffs.

It's not bollocks though? its not being made crystal clear to parents that it's gambling, when a kid asks their parent if they can buy something for a video game, not for one second as a parent would you think it's borderline gambling - the thought wouldn't even cross your mind because it hasns't been recognized as gambling and thus there are no warnings on the packaging etc.

Yes because no matter how harmless the content of the loot boxes is it's still gambling.

The content in the loot boxes are utterly irrelevant and besides the point. Loot boxes are essentially virtual slot machines rigged in a way to get around gambling laws.

But no matter how you look at it not even the "everyone wins something" technicality removes the fact that loot boxes are gambling. And if publishers want to sell cosmetics they can do that like it used to be. You pick the cosmetic you want and simply just buy the fucking thing.

And if this means that TCGs and CCGs gets burned, just fucking blame EA and all other greedy little fuckers that didn't know when to stop..

They are technically by definition modern gambling, but then so were the panini football stickers I used to collect in the 80s.

Yep and if this turns really bad you can probably kiss all CCGs and TCGs goodbye. And it'll all be thanks to EA.
