Right, my 9400GT obviously isnt cutting it with most of the newer games, and even with 6 gig ram (64 bit OS) i'm not really seing much of a difference FPS wise. so now i'm on the lookout for a better card, and one that wont make me have to live on noodles for a few months :)

but having fuck all clue about any of these things i thought it would be best to stop by here and ask what u think first :)

i was having a goat eye at the Nvidia GeForce GTS250 1GB, it looks really good but maybe slightly on the expensive side, is there anything out there with simmilar specs that are cheaper? preferably not second hand stuff as i never had any luck there.

and would i need to buy a better PSU to? have a 530W Hiper one now.

Following up on this thread I'm looking for a replacement for my rather poor Radeon X1300 256Mb!

The Radeon 4770 seems to fit the bill. There only seems to be reference designs available that I can see and the cheapest at Ebuyer is a PowerColor version at £83.05. There are slightly more expensive versions by Gigabyte and XFX but seem the same.

PowerColor HD 4770 512MB GDDR5 Dual DVI HDTV Out PCI-E Graphics Card - Ebuyer

Does this seem the right choice of card at about that price point and anyone seen it cheaper than £80?

The 4770 is supposed to be a pretty good card, first 40nm chip from ATI. Although it is new, hence the reference designs. Can see a cheaper price for an Asus on Scan, which is in stock at just under £80.

Cheers Inactionman - I'd seen it too but once I whack on the £8 carriage it's comes in more expensive. Should have specified that the Ebuyer price was free delivery.

It only has 5.1 sound rather than 7.1 like the rest of the range....

The same card is £109 at Ebuyer (with the newer larger fan shown at OC) and they all seem to list 5.1 sound in the details so I'm not sure there is any difference. In fact I just checked the details between several of the 4850's and they all seem to be the same details except some that list a silent cooler.

Seems to make that a bargain then.

Looking at the reviews there's not much to seperate a 4770 and a 4850 in terms of performance, except the 4770's are supposed to overclock very well. They also use less less power and generate less heat. So a tough decision if you can get them for a similar price.

Oh and that cheap 4850 is a bit slow, 625MHz on the core vs. the standard 650MHz, and 1986MHz on the ram vs. the standard 2100MHz. Probably can be overclocked to compensate though.

625 MHz core and 1933 Mhz Ram are the reference specs. Only the Overclocked cards have higher.

So I guess it comes down to the 4850 being a bit faster and the 4770 being more power efficient.
