some fo you guys pushing 3 days are insane. i went to sleep last night at about 1730 and didnt wake up till 7 this morning.

It depends how you deal with it, I have just realised that I did longer in vegas, but had at least an hour of sleep every night for 4 days.

If your diet is shit, and you are into caffine, your body will suffer. Lots of water and good meals and you are sorted.

Its odd how people react differently to grief, I see a lot of you who had very bad news (sorry to hear those stories guys /hug) and couldn't sleep as a result.

When I am very upset it acts like a sedative(sp?) and *poof* I go out like a light. After my grandma's funeral everyone was in the house having drinks and nibbles and I don't really remember going upstairs but several hours later when everyone was gone someone came and woke me up but I could have happily slept the rest of the day.

I think it's a comfort thing just crawling into bed and letting sleep stop my upset but when I am happy or excited I need very little sleep I am usually existing on about 5 hrs a night in the run up to christmas lol and wake up early because I don't want to miss anything.

...I was helped along by various pills......

oO if we are including drug assisted i have to say i have been on some pretty fucking big benders with E's Coke and Weed. Weekends would start on the Thursdays and would shut down Monday night or Tuesday mornings depending on if the goodies would run out or not!! :D

This was all after my brother passed away and i kinda got lost for a year and half. After a number of visits to hospital to get my stomach pumped the mind and body finally gave up on me - as well as running out of money.

To quote the immortal Scarface - Dont get high on your own supply!!

Or not.

It's as simple as this;

Different body.

That's it, no bullsh*t.

Interesting, as i said earlier that it's around 70 hours.

It's bullsh*t though that "good meals and lots of water will help you stay up!", like it's some definitive way.

Like that Healthy McGreenweed crap is going to help with everything.

You stay up, your body/mind needs sleep, your body suffers. How much and how long you can go, up to the person.

ofc it is......

sugar/glucose give you a short high energy burst then you go onto a downer and feel tired and lathargic.

thats not an opinion, thats scientific fact

so if u use use lots of sugary shit and high caffine for like a 3 day high, the downer is going to be immense

No one was talking about how the "downer" is.

I drink, smoke, eat sugar, drinks sodas, eat what i want and when i've been up for a regular 40h session, i have a regular 8h sleep and be done with it.

How? Because that's how my body works.

Science may show what happens in a control body, but it doesn't tell what levels EVERY human body works on.

Me and Ch3tan could have the same exact diet, and still we would have different results.

Oh and fyi; "sugar gives you a bad downer" doesn't mean "good meals and water will help". It just means "avoid sugar highs."

LOL, is toht arguing against water and complex carbs as opposed to simple carbs?

NO point presenting a scientific argument gohan, he won't believe it.

Now it's a fight!!!!!!!!

Nah, just some defining and telling Ch3tan to grow up :p

Different people react differently to different substances/events.

I don't think anyone can disagree with that.

thats not really the same then. im referring to waking period which means no sleep at all.

ive gone for 2 weeks in mexico with only 2 hours of sleep here and there. its a different beast to no sleep.

52 hours, me and two friends just wanted to se how long we could go... things gets wierd after two days... it took all three of us ten minutes to figure out how long we've been going around the 50th hour...

Eat somewhat regulary and make sure you always do something... sitting still in a sofa, drinking beers and chatting was what nocked us out.

Funny enough, when i was hospitalized, i was awake for 30 hours after it :D

It's just that some people don't need as much sleep, some people actually feel worse with more sleep.

That stands without a doubt. Some people really can stay up for little more then a day while others can stay up for over a week without the need for sleep: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Randy_Gardner_(record_holder) (Sorry, had to, with a record and name like that :D. That's kind of side stepping the point though; certain food types, life styles and such will effect that amount of time, no matter who the person is.

Interesting, as i said earlier that it's around 70 hours.

Like that Healthy McGreenweed crap is going to help with everything.

You stay up, your body/mind needs sleep, your body suffers. How much and how long you can go, up to the person.

Caffeine/sugar will give short term energy boosts yet after a while, the effect will wear off and you'll trough, lower then if you hadn't of had them in the first place, then, after a while, those levels will return to normal. The amount that you take will only effect the amount that you fall by. While the levels of impact will differ from person to person, the nature of the drugs will act in the same way, just as exercise, healthy meals during the time, even illegal drug taking, they'll all have effects on the length of time you're able to stay up.

If you're used to drinking caffeine daily or smoking daily, caffeine/nicotine stores in the body will still be creating significant chemical imbalances in the brain for a number of days after stopping taking them. With that taken into consideration, if a coffee drinker, smoker or whatever stops the same day they're intent on staying up, they'll note a negative impact on the length of time they're able to stay up, just as they'll have restless nights while their body readjusts. In this sense, I'd agree with the above sentiment.

If however you were to purge the body of its expectance of these chemicals, by their very nature, you should be feeling better after a longer period of time then if you hadn't of had them in the first place.

There is of course no blanket period of time a person can stay up for before a switch turns off, everything about a persons life will effect it on an individual daily basis, even if the changes aren't huge. With this discussion, I think both sides are missing the importance of the link between them both being correct. Yes certain food types and ignoring uppers/downers will in theory, allow you to stay up for longer but in practice, a sudden complete change in life style to adapt to a short term sleeping goal will only have a negative impact; just look at dieters. No-one is realistically going to change their dietery habits weeks in advance in order to stay up so an equilibrium has to be set on an individual basis. This is why there are no miracle suggestions for any dietery needs.

Short term I agree with Tohtori, long term I agree with gohan and others! ;)

coming up on 70 hours working on the final edit of a school project when I was 19. I must say, you notice the awesomely scary power of nicotine, alcohol and caffeine at about 40 hours, literally tripling your speed of thought, action and speech. The freaky thing is that at 60 hours that power is gone and a quad espresso fails to do anything for you at all.

Scariest thing I ever did was drive after about 50 hours of no sleep. Never again.

The most i've done is just a bit over 3 days straight due to travelling and a total inability to sleep sitting up in planes. It all got very messy for the last while.

I know what you mean about the driving thing, after my son was born i drove home from the hospital having been up for 3 days having only had 3 hours sleep in total for that time. There is no way i could have legally driven, but i was in no fit state to stop myself. Fortunately it was about 3 in the morning on new years eve so the roads were empty so i drove very slowly!

Yeah - I have to get my sleep too, though its funny - when i go to a party, and do all nighter and not go sleep, i'm fine til about 2/3 PM then i fall asleep till like 8 the next morning lmao, I'm silly but - I went to a lecture thing the other night, and ruining your personal patterns can affect you quite dangerously apparently, For example - most people - they sleep during the night when they're tired, and there the terribly ineffective if they're awake whilst they're supposed to be asleep, but whilst awake they're very effective - It all balances out - so if you are what I mentioned before, then you're 80% effective during 2PM-3PM - and you're 20% effective 2AM-3AM - if you ruin this by working nightshifts and doing what your body's telling you not to - then this can cause you to run 50% effective every day all day for the rest of your life - and you cannot change it.

So, this made me think - If most employers are telling their employees to start at 8 and finish at 6 - this would be a ineffective method, as they would be 40% effective effectively, whereas if they let them wake up at say - 10? - then they would be alot more effective, meaning that the hours that they work that day x their effectiveness would be much higher...

But yeah, I suppose with most work, you can only do as much work as you can in the allocated time.

What's your thoughts? :)

sounds like a steaming pile of walrus shit to me. or perhaps youre fishing for answers to some coursework or something for school?
ive experienced many instances where ive slept fuck all for a week or two. how can you say that i am now runnign at 50% of my maximum effectiveness for the rest of my life? surely that involves measuring my effectiveness (if this is even possible) while i live a perfect life. then reanimate me and do the same again but sleeping as and when.
