Well, who would have thought UEFA would be spineless enough to change the rules

*sigh*

That means all the top 4 clubs who deservedly qualified for the Champions League are going to suffer by losing around £5m. That shouldnt be the case.

I can see it now

Rafa Benitez:

Ahh ummm yes... we um failed to er qualify this season for the hm champions league, but if you look at the way we performed in the hmm premiership you will um see we had to field our weakest team on most occasion as we have hmm injury problems yea... we ave just a congested fixture list as well...

Bah what a crock of shit. They weren't good enough to qualify. It doesn't matter if they won. If they win the champions league yet can't even make the top 4 in there domestic league then they shouldn't be entered.

The top teams won't really suffer that's about a years wages for one of their top players, I suppose 5 million would probably be enough to pay the wages of all the everton players for a few years though so i guess it's not good news for them.

They won it.. so they should be able to defend their title. This rule should have never existed in the first place.

It's fair play that they're allowed to defend their trophy. And £5 million is nothing to three of the other English teams. It would make a difference to Everton, but then will they qualify for the knockout stages? Highly unlikely.

Well Liverpool made it to win the Final last season, Underdogs, never expected to win etc etc so counting out Everton is baaaad.

Its the simple fact that every other competition, either its the World Cup, European Championship, The Championship - The winners of said competition dont automatically gain entry into it, they have to do exactly what every other team has to do - and qualify.

Liverpool did not qualify, winning a cup does not (did not...) mean instant qualification

They deserve to be in it. It is a farce when the holders do not defend their title.

Your right, Liverpool made it as underdogs, thankfully Everton won't.

*writes off Evertons chances of any glory next season*

Yes it does and it's the correct thing to do. If the holders of the Champions League aren't allowed to defend their title then it completely devalues the competition, it'd be fucking pointless.

Rules may well be rules but sometimes rules are utter toss.

It's the FA thats spinless TBH, I will quote from the uefa rule book:
UEFA Champions League Regulations said:
Rule 1.03 - At the request of the national association
concerned
, the UEFA Champions League title-holders may be entered for
this competition, as an additional representative of that association,
if they have not qualified for the UEFA Champions League via the top
domestic league championship. If, in such a case, the title-holders come
from an association entitled to enter four teams for the UEFA Champions
League, the fourth-placed club in the top domestic league championship
has to be entered for the UEFA Cup
The FA were stupid enough to decide our teams in the champions league before they even knew liverpool were in the final, either they had no hope for liverpool. or they just hoped UEFA would decide. I'm disappointed in UEFA, but not surprised.

Of course having the 3rd and 4th (and quite possibly 2nd) teams from a league doesn't, I just hope that the G14 clubs don't get their way, otherwise the champions league will almost become an old boys club for those that have the money, regardless of general performance (Real Madrid anyone...).

Maybe shit enough to win it again, eh?

Really I understand that you may dislike them, but they did tremendously well to win the competition and deserve to defend it.

And had a fair bit of luck along the way!

5th place in premiership, one of the worse away records in the league.

They showed how shit they are!

Whilst I apologise for resurrecting this old thread it just had to be done following tonights Everton performance. It would have been a travesty if Liverpool had been kept out of the Champions League for the sake of Everton's bunch of no hopers.

I think it shows the difference between the top 3 and the rest, shows the real strength of the prem. If 4th place is up for grabs again we could have the same thing next year, West Ham for europe anyone? :(

Good timing on the ol' bump. We'll do Everton 7-0 again on Monday, thank you very much.

Just don't mention FC Thun... ;)

Thing is I could see a team like West Ham doing well in Europe, Everton are just to depressing, they dont even try to play football.

Celtic tbh

They got hammered in the first leg, yet fought back bravely in the second leg. Can we use Liverpools excuse for poor form last season, and blame injuries, suspensions etc?

I think the second leg is winnable.. but whether 4 goals can happen i really dont know, we have a great team, but unfortunatly we're being let down by the fact that we dont have any goalscorers (Apart from Beattie, but tbh injuries, suspensions have really knackered him, but for £6m i think it was a waste)

We should have gone in for McCarthy, i would have really liked him to have joined us. Im not looking forward to playing Arsenal, but we have to at some point, and maybe we can play "like th wounded animal", and while they dont have Henry we just might have a slim chance.... Slim being the word though.

The BBC boards have been filled with shite for the past day, the site i generally go on to view the 606, but the past 20 pages or so just arent worthit.
