Infant mortality is the norm, we can't extend our sensibilities to this culture, when things are bad, there's no food, the crops have been lost, no medicine no fuel for warmth, what would you do?

I have no problem with people being sceptic about Live8, but ignorance to the subject is pretty unforgiveable.

The reality is that most people dont gove a f?k, if we did we could have sorted it 40 yrs ago.
We think Africans are incapable of running their own sh1t , and most of the time we a right.

That’s the point. This whole thing isn’t to raise money, or to convince politicians (though the pressure does help). It’s to get the general public actually thinking about it. Yes, you’re right we could have sorted it 40 years ago, that’s the whole god damn point. It’s very easy for us to forget about the conditions these people are living in, which is why we need being reminded and educated. It’s not just about the debt, we need to give them a chance to then improve their economy, one of the biggest ways we can help them to do this is through fairer trade, making trade fairer is down to us - the general public can make trade fairer by simply choosing the products they purchase more carefully. Live 8 is about educating people about things like this, they did a damn good job – if you're ignorant to this then that is your fault, not theirs.

I find this quite funny, you see the fact that every newspaper had the live8 concert taking up 80% of its front page today proves that it is working. The fact that every newspaper is examining, cross-examining, complaining about and praising the concert and the future plans proves that it has worked. There are a series of concerts organized to run through Africa, designed to educate the people there in what they can do to overthrow their government and be part of a fully functioning democracy. I agree, though, that the constant trend of corruption is the biggest problem that this whole operation faces.

Most charities run schemes allowing those stuck in that situation to work for them, you get your job, they get free work – and you still get benefits. You also then have a solid refence which increases your chances of breaking the threshold of that ‘trap’. Also, as an added bonus you get to sort out our country, which you seem to think is in such a mess. Come tomorrow though you wont be hunting around for a charity to work for, don’t use your laziness as an excuse to not be concerned about other peoples suffering.

Yes this is a problem, but don’t look down on the people doing this. Countries go through periods of change when becoming more civilized, you’d be amazed how similar the economic and social problems found in third world countries are to those in our own country about 200 years ago, one of which is very high birth rates and child mortality rates. The problem is just worsened over there because of the hostile environment, climate etc.

Theres many British unemployed who could fill those jobs but dont get a chance because they are undercut by the "imports" of cheap labour!

example local hospital short on nurses...so what did they do , they "imported" Spanish nurses because these nurses were willing to work for less than the minimum wage. But thats the problem alot of the African countries havent become more civilized, they are still hell bent on killing each other because of tribal warfare

They aren't unskilled, it would be very economically unviable to recruit unskilled foreign workers for these types of jobs. Also the government aren't doing it for the kicks, they are doing it because they have to - ie there are shortages of people prepared to do those essential jobs - we don't want them - someone has to do them - so they look elsewhere, and yes it does cost more in the long run, it's only done because they have to - so that we can keep all our services which we'd be outraged to lose.

Now you do have a valid point here (though I am fairly sure you read the sun ), our Government is too soft when it comes to asylum seekers, but then I think it's too soft when it comes to those on benefits. Now I still think you are entitled to seek that financial help and I think that you, personally, are justified in claiming benefits, even though some other people abuse the system. I feel exactly the same about seeking asylum and immigration.

Welcome to the world of multi-tasking We can sort out our own country and help others. I guess it comes down to priorities, I personally see the vast majority of problems in this country as trivial in comparison to those suffered elsewhere. We are very lucky.

I'm not that naive, to be quite honest I don't think it will do a massive amount to be on one of these schemes, I think the charities gain more than the individuals, but I don't see that as a bad thing - I also don't see the harm in trying.

My point here is, that even if Madonna in this case gave 99% of her wage to charity, she would still live like a queen. Average Joes can't do that, but I'm sure many would if they could.

I never said they were obliged to give away anything, and I never said they did'nt do it cause they want to. But I'm pretty sure there exist some famous people who'd rather keep this money than give it away. You don't know what all the famous people think, and why they do certain actions. Neither do I. So surely there is famous people whom also gives away cause they are simply nice guys.

Firstly, I never moaned and bitched about how little any celeberties give away to charity. I simply used Madonna and some numbers caught out of the air as an example to make a point. Which is that I think it is more amazing when a poor guy gives the little he got to spare to charity, than when a rich guy gives much money.

I never said anyone should give 99% of their annual salary, but if I did have 200 million dollars however, and gave this much away, I would still be fairly rich. If an average guy does, he would become one of the victims he is trying to save. That was another point I was trying to make.

The majority of the ppl who come to this country are allowed in because this stupid Government thinks it great offering skilled jobs to unskilled workers just so they have to pay them less. Theres many British unemployed who could fill those jobs but dont get a chance because they are undercut by the "imports" of cheap labour!

example local hospital short on nurses...so what did they do , they "imported" Spanish nurses because these nurses were willing to work for less than the minimum wage. Didnt matter that they couldnt speak fecking English and couldnt understand what you was saying. Now they are all having to go on intensive English courses by which time they have done..with costs etc it would of been cheaper to employ someone from this country !

As for my laziness being an excuse for not being concerned about others suffering. Am only concerned with suffering of those closest to me and those within my own country, until those problems are resolved i aint gonna look elsewhere

But thats the problem alot of the African countries havent become more civilized, they are still hell bent on killing each other because of tribal warfare

They have no sense of law and order, hence why in South Africa i read somewhere there is a murder every 15secs and a rape every 20secs

Not only that in some places you need to hire private fecking security just to go shopping !

Top that with the climate in some countries there, where it just doesnt rain so they are unable to grow enough food to feed themselves, to me it natures way of saying look your not suppose to live here...hence why no food grows here please find somewhere else.

We can only do so much, can only finance so much but after that its down to nature and the ppl themselves and if they are still gonna breed like rabbits in a place wheres theres no food..then its down to natural selection and a case of only the strong survive. But those strong should take the hint and move elsewhere to help themselves.

probably quite off topic here but i think its relavent, remember the tsunami? well after everyone worked fantastically to raise money to sedn out there one of the governments of a country affected decided to tax the donated money, which ment less going to the people who were homeless and hungry and more to the polititians (yay)

We can all give money to these charities, food and clothing donations with the very best of intentions, weather we're a billionarre rock star or just average joe earning 9k a year but unless it actually gets to the people there is no point, i remember seeing something about one of these african countries that was suffering and all the charity packages that were going there were getting raided by the border guards and split between them, tbh less hand outs and more talking, we need to root out the bad apples and make these countries clean so that aid will actually get to the people who need it.

another point about africa is that they are in so much trouble they need more than money, they need education (ok ok i know how patronising that sounds) but theres an obscene amount of people there with aids, they get given birth control and wont use it, i even saw a documentary last year (or early this year cant remember) where a little baby girl had been raped because the local witch doctor told a bloke he could get rid of his aids by raping a baby girl (the younger the better) This is going to sound increadibly patronising but there is absoloutely no point in allowing people to continue like this, in the end they are going to wipe themselves out and no amount of help we offer can stop it, its not that they are stupid, its just that they havent had the chance to be educated. Ive seen shows where they make housing projects over there and the people housed in them then gut the houses sell the wood, copper pipes and furnature and go back to living in a shanti, or where they have land for crops and decide to farm goats as they are easy to feed, yeah too easy the goats eat everything and nothing will grow there.

Seriously what hope is there for these people if they know no better if people think like that how the hell are they supposed to support themselves and their families??

Politicians have their own agendas as everyone should know by now, so on the surface it "looks" like they gave into public pressure, a pop concert and cancelled just because of that.

Funniest i thing i saw in the British media is when the shanty towns were being demolished, ILLEGAL settlements being removed with the residents being given advanced notice of years not months being portrayed as being wrong.
