Canned laughter is pointless. If something is funny you will laugh. Also just because something is funny doesnt mean you have to go hahahah out loud really stupidly. Often something funny makes you smile, or just think in your head, heh the was witty .... or something.
I dont really need the show telling me when something is funny.
Although Fawlty Towers did have canned laughter, so I'm sort of contradicting myself. :)

It is though, unfunny jokes, that annoying Craig Charles (I've probably got his name wrong) bloke. That other annoying coloured person. Craaaaap.

Coloured? Only heard my grandparents use that. Danny John Jules you mean? (saw him in storymakers btw, lol).
The early ones are actually quite good imo. As I'm sure most sane people will tell you, it took quite a dive in the last few series.

Was watching Blackadder again on UK gold, forgot how good it was :)

Well I didnt know his name, and black is considered racist, so I tried to put it politely. :)

I can help here! I have the first four seasons on DVD.

M*A*S*H had a laughter track added when it was first produced, as was the style of the time and is still common on American sitcoms. When the show was broadcast on terrestrial channels in the UK the laughter track was removed. Now on cable channels the laughter track remains because cable channels are run by ****s.

My DVDs have the option to remove the laughter track, thank God, because with it the whole show is a farce.

Also, I was a huge fan of Red Dwarf but I felt my loyalty to it slip with series 5. All the best episodes are in series 3 and 4. 1 and 2 are bland and amaterish, from 5 onwards they are clearly scraping the barrel for ideas and the humour has become cheap. All IMO, of course.

Because of the connotations it has. Look up a direct interpretation in the dictionary and you'll see.

I personally dont think it is racist, although having only recently finished education I can tell you its not something you want to say around friends.

He has a point. I understand using 'black' is acceptable, but my Government handbook on politically-correct terminology, titled "How Not To Rile The Coloureds" is dated 1954.

I've only just realised that 'negro' is actually black in another language. I noticed some (black obv) printer toner with Black | Noir | Negro on the side. :/

As for calling someone black I don't think so. Since you've got MOBO's and radio stations always saying 'Music for the black youth' or whatever.

I feel more comfortable describing a black person as 'black' rather than 'coloured', although I would only do that if I was quickly trying to tell someone who to see (ie its that fat geezer down there with the purple tie, or its the black fella over there).

Doesn't offend me, and I don't know anyone else whos offended by it.

In terms of canned laughter can anyone confirm the following for me?

Now the program is re-running on Paramount with canned laughter, and it is almost unwatchable, this is so sad :(

i believe two series were made where "canned laughter" was added

it was withdrawn after that due to many complaints

Personally I call them black, they call me white so why not vica versa? Wont call them ******s tho or, as some of the americans like to call them out here "sand ******s".

and 'coloured' is the worst of it out of the lot

Black Adder is great and that has canned laughter. Perhaps if a commedy is good enough you dont notice so much that they are trying to prompt you to laugh cos you're too busy laughing :p

Blackadder was always filmed in front of a live studio audience, and so the laughter is real and has an organic feel to it - the actors pause for it and feed off it and everything is wonderful.

Closed studio/location comedies like M*A*S*H and parts of Red Dwarf (more and more parts as time's gone on) have a laughter track (or 'canned laughter') in a perceived attempt to make the viewers think they're having fun.

Blackadder is probably my all time favourite... earlier Red Dwarf was ok but it got a bit stale.

The worst EVER abuse of a good program by adding canned laughter was.......

The Pink Panther cartoons:(

I'm jumping onto the "Red Dwarf is shit" bandwagon.

The first two series were good, then it went all crappy.

Hate to break a point but all of Red Dwarf episodes with exception to some pre-recorded sections, up to series 7 were filmed in front of a live studio audience. After that, as was correctly pointed out, further episodes were played in front of an audience before release. It's therefore not canned, just "pre-recorded" or "dubbed".

< sorry, RD buff alert.
