Not in the slightest....

The problem with Linux is all the commands are fully documented, but you need to know what the command IS before you can get help on it. So when I'm staring at my little console window wondering how in the name of satans hairy butthole I am supposed to get a list of active processes under my username its really really odd that 'ps -ef | grep sgb' doesn't just leap right out at me ;)

I was thinking Linux specific...
I tried #linux on quakenet, but they were all babbling away in Swedish (which isn't inherently evil as such, its just that I don't understand a word of it) and when I asked for help the results were less than excellent.
Apparently Open Source doesn't extend as far as information :)

Compared next to windows no one really uses Linux, do you see a Windows forum? then why do you expect a Linux one ;)

Cos windows is so easy to use even my Gran figured it out...yet has no real fans, just users.

Linux on the otherhand is about as transparent as treacle and has legions of raving fanatics trying to convince everyone they meet its the best thing ever made. A claim I'd be quite willing to believe if they'd just help me get past the "I've installed it, now WTF do I start" stage ;)

Scuse my bitter ramblings but I'm at work, I have backache, and Linux is still an inpenetrable fog of command lines and conf files. I don't even know where to start :)

Linux has few fans as well, most the people use it because either they're looking for something different or just hate MS. Most however, like youself, can't even get past the install since its not particularly friendly :)

I haven't used linux in a while, and i never fully got to grips with(did get q3 and UT running ok:)). You can get by using the many, many, many "how to's"(i think they're linked from redhat.com )and reading the many linux newsgroups(lots of helpfull ppl there).
Also, get X installed as quickly as possible, it makes things SO much easier.

We have a Linux server at work, and next to the NT servers it is rock solid - runs our DHCP server, Intranet and Oracle 8i databases (and sometimes Quake 3 server ;) ).

As a server os it's brill. As a desktop one its pretty naff, due to poor driver availability and limited applications - although this is getting better all the time.

To get started, use a good distribution. Mandrake 7.1 is the one we use, and has a full graphical install, automatic detection of plug and pray devices, etc. Piece of piss to install. The point about getting X Windows up and running (under KDE - forget Gnome) is right. Setting stuff up in the GUI is easy - Samba and Apache, etc, can be set up using Windows type wizards.

As for finding the commands, I have a Que book (Using Linux) which goes through each function one at a time - bloody good if you're new to Linux ('bout £18).

Linux forum would be good though, especially for setting up Linux for game servers, and running Q3 / UT, etc on 'em.

Yes, could we have a Linux forum? Ok, so there isn't a windows forum but who needs one? :D

I've been using Linux for about a year now and I sympathise with MrChumble, it does take a lot of time to get to grips with. Like he said, there's plenty of documentation around but when you don't know the command how can you look it up?

I'd say it's definitely worth persisting with. I have two machines running RedHat Linux and, unlike my Windows machines, they have NEVER crashed! I use one as internet gateway and firewall and the other as a server for files/intranet/games etc etc etc

There is a joint forum for OSes, doesn't need to be a sperate Linux forum.

I am all for a Linux forum, I run Mandrake 7.0 and 7.1 on various machines it would be great to see what sort of problems and solutions are out there.

I have already been successfull with QII, Q3 and UT under the above.
