Ok,

Am going to be installing a pretty hefty server at FH towers on Sunday and am currently undecided on what distro to use as the host operating system.

The server will run linux with either the XEN or OpenVZ kernel to give me the ability to create virtual machines. On top of this I will install vmware gsx just in case of windows :p

So, I am currently torn between Centos 5 and Ubuntu 7.04 server for the os.

I am familiar with Redhat/fedora so Centos seems a natural choice.

The hardware platform consists of the following:

2 x dual core Socket F Opteron 2212
4 gb memory (for now, can be upgraded to 32gb)
Dual gig eth ports
4 x 250gb sata ii maxtors

Comments welcome...

I'd recommend CentOS 5.0 if you're going down the Xen route, it includes Xen 3.0.3.

If you are running virtual servers then it doesn't matter too much what distribution the host server runs - all the interesting stuff goes on inside the virtual machines. I've recently remotely reinstalled the host Linux distribution on a few Xen powered servers whilst keeping the virtual machines intact. It's nice and flexible if setup correctly.
