Since the help section has that as correct perhaps you could tell me how it's user fucking error.

You add [ URL=... ] the text to link [ /URL ], e.g.

[url=http://uk.news.yahoo.com/crowded-earth-many-too-many-023009322.html]my link[/url]

Gives:
my link

If the URL in the URL= bit is already a link (shows in different colour and if you click on it the "unlink" icon in the toolbar activates) it appears to have issues. Just select it and click the unlink button.

The [URL= stuff works better if you're not using the rich text editor. If you want to link something in the rich text one, just select the text to link and click "Link" from the toolbar, then you paste the URL in and it does the BB code invisibly

I think the rich text editor is trying to be clever and actually being annoying by automatically linked the URL as you paste it, so when you add the URL= bit ...

e.g. http://www.example.com]my link[/URL]

The issue here is the requirement to surround a URL with the ' character (apostrophe) when typed in manually.
