it's drop dead gorgeous, but the gameplay isn't all that great imo

I haven't played it a whole lot but it does look extremely nice and the noob startup process seems pretty well crafted. But at this stage I'm not really interested in killing monsters over and over for months, something which I could do just as well in any of the other MMORPG's on the market, in the hope that the end game will be fun and challenging.

If they wanted to make a PvP game then they should have made it PvP. I don't think creating a level grind and then having the proper game stuck on top is an acceptable way of making games. I'm all for the concept of applied effort leading to in-game rewards but killing the same monster over and over is neither fun nor challenging and a computer game without either of those characteristics should have never got off the drawing board.

I fully agree with that.
Sadly EQ, who started the trend, became so successfull and each and every mmog after it has followed in it's footsteps...
I've yet to find an mmog where they actually made leveling interesting to a point where you want to level as much as possible, just because it's a huge blast.

I gotta say that I enjoyed every moment of my first EQ chars trek from 1 to 60. It took over 2 years but because it was my first MMORPG and my first character everything was a new experience and it was always exciting. It was also fun because everybody else was new, so you get much more of a sense of team spirit not like the elitism that develops as games get older. Guilds became really tight knit communities and once you hit 60 the political game took over and you're locked into a dominance struggle with ever other guild on the server.

Personally I think developers are trying to shape the games too much. Everybody has done level grinds now and we're all sick of them so it's about time they ditched them and found another way of maintaining a playerbase. Maybe more sandbox style RPG's are needed, let communities develop and find their own paths through the game. Anything that doesn't require me to kill 7,000 moss snakes to reach level 10 :/

The two things I dislike most are being forced to repeat the level grind - and respeccing.... If I hit level 50 once I should be entitled to start a character at 80% of that if i want, it's my subscription money after all...

Secondly, (and games like AC2 are a prime example of this), the amount of rebalancing done ingame SUCKS. In Asherons Call 2 there are 3 races, each of 3 major classes which further divide into 2 subsets. 18 distinct player classes in total. Each has their melee, magic and missile specialists. When you generate your character you choose race, then only ingame do you specialise beyond that... Because of this, when the GM's/Devs introduce a major revision to a class (which they have to nearly every class) they 'skills reset' anyone who has selected that path, crediting skill points and XP, allowing them to choose a new class if they like - and in many cases those revisions can totally ruin the playstyle you were after. That's not been too bad in some cases, maybe you fancied a change to a different subclass to your race anyhow, but if your original choise of a lugian elementalist and your second choice would have been a human archer/enchanter, you're stuffed. Congratulations, you now own a level 50 nobody. The restriction by race is down to nothing but a limitation in the game engine, they could easily create some nice storyline about the balance of power, and reincarnataion, but the lazy devs instead are driving off customers in droves. A game which used to run all three euro servers at full capacity doesn't have the peak useage figures now to max out a single box. It's gotten so bad that they're considering merging the servers, but they've just realised this probably won't be possible in europe until they unify the three language versions to a single codebase. pff

Lineage 2 is the most ridiculously, blatantly sexual MMORPG I've ever seen. I mean, the default "look" for a starter dark elf female is this. And uh, well, suffice to say you get to see plenty of skin, and plenty of opportunities to stare at female under-garments. The thing is, as far as I know, female players don't actually get any choice NOT to look utterly slutty. Plus, with the male and female dwarven characters looking like this, well, uh, it makes me feel a little sick, frankly.

Post your upskirt too Louse, that'll help draw extra attention! It's a shame really because the male characters look quite cool, but when your playerbase consists primarily of single men then it probably pays to cater toward them. Asian men like busty vixens and hentai schoolgirls and god knows there ain't enough porn on the web as it is.

Yeah I hadn't mentioned the fact that female casters' miniskirts flap around wildly every time they cast a spell for fear of the NDA enforcers tracking me down and murdering me in my sleep, so uh, yeah.

The look of the characters is. essentially, anime. So we all know that the innocent looking female dwarf is going to 'kick some serious ass'.

It has been a yopic in WoW though and it seems that you will essentially look like what you wear. (Some 100% plate clad reputedly female characters around for example)

Be interesting to see what happens in the US. Can't see there being any issue in Europe - we are more laid back and less prudish in many ways (for better or for worse). Arguably the Asian market is less prudish still and so - supposedly - has a healthier mental approach to such things. So maybe it will do us good.

I wouldn't call being concerned about this "prudish", though. I mean, some of the characters are damned hot, frankly, it's just that from my experience, females don't get any option to ditch the miniskirt, or to change out of the bondage gear, or whatever. And I find the dwarven thing vaguely disturbing because of the obviously huge age difference of the characters. In such a sexual environment, it's just creepy.

8000 downloads from Fileplanet alone (and rising). 5000 closed beta testers. No idea how many downloads from the Lineage2 site.
4th server already announced. Reminds me of the early EQ chaos, DAoC SI & ToA chaos etc. Looks good though, hopefully it will have its act together soon.

Finally got it downloaded (wow huge!) and pretty much haven't decided if it can replace DAOC for me yet, to much of a lost noob there :) kinda fun tho and the graphics are very nice, but agreed to the above that the women chars are pretty underdressed! Geesh, I was freezing playing that game! Give me clothes!

They seem to take one down all the time while working on it, either try another server or just keep spamming on the server button till it lets you in ;)

I'm playing.
It looks nice, I mean.....awesome...~thinks of her Dark Elf bouncing around~ <drool> ...*cough* erm but after the initial excitement...I'm beginning to notice the stuff I don't like. I'm used to DAoC mind, only mmorpg I've played. Although the spells in LII look really kewl too...hmm I think I'm confused. :(
Have Dark Elf fighter atm as my main.. using bow and dagger, powerful and fast with SP in both :)
Not been pk'd yet...
Loads of peeps moaning in chat...loads and loads....(Alt + J closes chat window)

I loiter around Seig but as it's usually resembling a sardine tin I head to Erica.
