Question Life without TV?

Anyone thought of dumping their TV's and just living off of web feeds n DVDs?

At the moment you could stream your bbc stuff off of Iplayer etc. and never pay another license fee - tempting?

I pretty much do that now anyway...apart from when I watch the News or a live sporting event...

It's what I pretty much do at uni. TV at home has no other use than being a medium for playing console games on.

DvDs/iPlayer/Downloading pretty much stops all need for a TV if you know where to look really.

Only thing the TV is good for is the Xbox, but that can be hooked up to the ol CRT(not literally) i reckon.

It's not as painful as one might believe.

My Father-in-law hasn't had a TV for 15 years, he seems happy enough listening to the radio. That doesn't stop the TV Licencing people harrassing him every year. They have sent out a bill for a TV license literally every year since he got shut of it. They have also come around to his house on eight occasions demanding entry. He has not so politely sent them on their way on each occasion.

I have a TV/Phone/Internet package. The only reason TV is in there is because it was a 3for2 deal and the difference wasn't worth it.

Only things I ever watch is BSG when it's actually on the Scifi Chan and compulsive reruns of Simpsons/Family Guy/South Park.

I watch Sky Movies, SciFi and BBC channels in HD on a regular basis. ITV can go swivel.
The kids watch the kids channels.
My wife watches a variety of stuff but makes use of the documentary and music channels.
In fact the only block that we never watch is the News block of channels.

I have a SkyHD box almost full of recorded stuff that I've yet to get around to watching. I have the full HD end to end setup and I like to make use of it when possible. Streaming video from the PC through the PS3 works well enough but isn't FullHD.

I still look at my TV and think "I love my telly!" 15 months after getting it.

Must admit I like my tv at times. Couldn't manage without my fix of Spongebob. I like to relax on an evening with me pyjamas on and a cold drink with a good movie. Sky movies has been great for me. Some cracking films that I would normally have tried to download illegally. Since upgrading Sky I haven't bothered with downloading any film. Must admit Sky is very much worth having. Some cracking documentaries along with a vast selection of other programmes too boot. I wasn't a tv guy before we had sky. Quite happy to have a tv now though. Alternative? Computer again I suppose and gaming. Not sure that is a step in the right direction. Probably read far more which would be a step in the right direction. Can do without it easily though.

I have fought about ditching the TV for a long while - 90%+ of whats on is just shit anyway, and if you ever get to watch you just sit there like a unproductive zombie

Seems reasonable enough, after all the licence fee is there to pay for BBC Content. No reason people should get it free by watching online instead of via a tele. In fact, there's more reason to charge licence fee for those online as it uses bandwidth that they have to pay for.

i did do it for a good year my tv blew up and just didnt buy a new one till a couple of weeks ago still dont use it to be honset if i want to watch something i can get it online or on dvd.

Well seeing big brother No.## just kicked off here I don't see a down side to a lack of TV access, most of the things worth watching are freely available on the web.

I seem to get most of my non pc entertainment from a good book or my ikkle DAB radio.

Agree an old Xbox is the way to go. Used one for about 2 years. streamed BBC news and Discovery to it to fullfill my needs, with the occasional series or movie uploaded to it when i was at a loose end saturday or sunday night. Now have a TV with 90 odd channels, and watch BBC news or Discovery, and stream watch series or movie dvd's....

Not really, there is reason to justify making it a subscription service. Those who then want to use iPlayer, etc. can then pay for the bandwidth they consume whilst I continue to not use it at no increased cost to me.

They could also sort this by making people enter their TV license number in a similar manner to an age verification check on some websites.

Yeah that was the impression I had. Wasn't it talk talk who was complaining about how much it cost, and threatening to throttle iplayer content in a "we're bitching but not actually going to do anything about it" way last year?

I havent had a TV licence or an aerial in my house for over 2 years and its brilliant. I use 4od, iplayer and very rarely itv.com for shows i really want to catch. The rest is all DVDs etc
