I broke up with my gf last week and decided i have been coasting life the last few years. I am now on a chasing skirt ban, as thats all i have done since hitting puberty, till christmas and signed up with a gym. Got my first personal training session tomorrow at 9am. Very excited actually

Gyms are for geeks tbh. - you don't need a gym, just go jogging around your estate lad, and then buy yourself some weights do some reps ;) i then also cycle - happy days.

Why up till christmas?

You're hoping to have some massive revelation/change of character between now & then?

buying some 'weights' and 'doing some reps' is not the same as working out correctly. neither is a personal trainer to be fair, most of them are just normal people but with an NVQ level 2 in fitness or something. that is the equivalent of a couple of GCSEs i think. they have you doing 100 different types of situps, curling 5kg weights and bodyweight exercises untill the cows come home. waste of time and money, youre best off looking at some decent forums.

unless that is what you want.

Clearly you didn't read his post, he has already had the revelation, he is taking the time to see where he goes from this point.

You are making the right choice, chill out for a bit take what comes along.

Oops just seen Tris's post. Doing what he is doing is great as a start off point though, knowing I was paying for it made me go every week, and it helped me get myself back to a very good fitness level in a short space of time. I was not there for weights and stuff mind!

True but youre already paying for the gym. rather than pay some mc donalds fitness bloke for information, spend the money on some kit and find some proper info on the internet!

Id rather pay for a trainer so i can get started off on the right foot rather than hurt myself. I havent trained in 10 years so forgot how to warm up and down correctly and a few sessions at first to get a schedule sorted will motivate me more than just going in and doing it alone.
I said till christmas cause its a reasonable time just to chill out from my life at the moment of drugs and women and put myself back on track.

Yeah your right Tris- But that guy has more knowledge than me and cause i booked a trainer for the first month i got the first month free so it worked out the same

Ah my Pt came for free :p I got another 8 mates to join up after me!!!!!!

Tbh he was really good, he was contract Pt to the gym and had his own personal fitness company, I do get where your coming from though alot of the people you see in the gym's are young kids.

My trainer covered everything from my diet to my lifestyle, at home and work. really benefitted from the 3 hours I spent with him. Just for the education that I was able to get from him without having to search for it. Because that is a big problem people don't really understand that for their particular size/structure/metabolism they can't do what someone else can do and expect the same results.

Personal training is overrated and expensive, all you need is motivation and a plan of what you want to do.

Yeah exactly my thinking cal. Better to have someone face-to-face and get a personal set up for you than follow the guidelines for some massive 25stone body builder

If you have a quick read of the fitness forums and nutrition forums around the web, you will find training plans and advise for all shapes and sizes.

i wasnt trying to shit on your enlightenment or anything :).
most trainers in the chain gyms are as useful as shitting on your face though from what ive seen. then again, i havent seen them all so i probably shouldnt tar them all.

Dont bash his head in for getting to a gym and work for his fitness with a personal trainer. Its much better than doing some halfarsed search on the internet and end up 50/50 chance to do everything wrong. A personal trainer will at least teach him the ground and he can pick it up from there

You seem to have misunderstood what we are saying. Personal trainers in the UK are for the most part useless, they also cost a lot. They are not required to do much training to become a personal trainer themselves, and many actually cause problems by not knowing what they are doing themselves.

If you had any idea of what the fitness websites are like then you would not assume that they were half -arsed or wrong. They are incredibly indepth and allow you to get multiple opinions and advise from a wide range of people.

I know a few personal trainers and cant recommend them enough. You cant get the same knowledge from the internet as you can from a good personal trainer.

Just because something you read on the internet works for someone, doesnt mean it will work for you. I got stuck benching 110k for 10 reps for 3 months. Tried everything, from diet, to exercises. Got my mates advice who is a personal trainer and withing 3 weeks I was upto 120k

Its very very very dependant on the personal trainer though. Some of the actively/retired competitive bodybuilders will have a zillion times more knowledge than a spotty teenager with level 3 NVQ award. If you have someone who actively engages in what they are prescribing as a PT you are in a far better position. The best advice i've received since training has come from a competitive powerlifter and my old training partner (who just won his debut bobybuilding show).

I would really consider looking at some bodybuilding forums if i were you though, theres a wealth of information on getting a good diet and routine together, whether you're looking at gaining muscle or just looking to get in better shape.

The majority of PT's qualified through NVQ/YMCA or whatever just employ what they've learnt on paper, rather than what they've used themselves or seen implemented by others. I gurantee tommorow morning you'll be asked if you want to tone or build muscle.
