Apologies if you've seen this already, for those who havent.

http://planetside.station.sony.com/game_updates/future_plans.jsp

As the battles for the domination of Auraxis™ rage, new weapons and tactical situations will continually emerge. The PlanetSide® team will be adding content and features throughout the game's life. Among the first updates will be a new aircraft: the Liberator.

The Liberator is a bomber that carries three passengers, all with weapons access. The pilot will position the aircraft over the intended target, with a bombardier dropping the payload. The bombardier may choose to drop single bombs or carpet-bomb across a small focused area. The pilot is equipped with a forward-mounted 35mm chain-cannon. The tail-gunner mans a 20mm cannon to defend the craft against a rear assault.

The Liberator's capability for clearing tightly grouped targets defending chokepoints and tactical positions will bring new offensive opportunities to the soldiers of all three Empires.

Keep watching the PlanetSide website for details on further enhancements and additions . the war has just begun and mastery of these additions will be crucial for victory.

Maybe they shouldve released the anti aircraft buggy/jeep thing first ?

Bombers arnt all that great.

It requires organisation and great skill between pilot and bomber, something the majority of players wont have.

However, outfit bombers with people who practice often will be troublesome.

I think it sounds class, gonna add a whole new level to the game and give some reaver pilots something to do apart from fight each other/use their rocket payload on one troop.

On a side note, ever reckon they'll introduce Naval warfare in the relatively vast ocean of Auraxis? Maybe launch pods from them or have aircraft carrier types, no tactical nukes though..that's just absurd.

Anyone played BF1942? R2R Bombers come to mind

considering how deadly AA fire is in game I think that all this will mean is more AA max's. Oh and bombers will be huge frickin targets for reavers. I really doubt this will have much impact on stratagies at all, other than LOOK UP!

think they are planning Naval units afaik

Anti-Air maxes are very destructive for aircraft, especially as their projectiles home in (vs) or explode in a big area-of-effect (tr). All this`ll mean is squads will have to think about air cover a bit more. No bad thing.

Ships!!

I'd finally have something better to ram Magriders with than a vanguard.

Bomber = Slow, No Firepower to defend itself, needs crew of 4.

I recon the bomber units will need some serious escort in form of Mosq/Reavers. Thus reaver weenies attention hopefully will be redirected from ground .. to air. Its not all that bad, besides OPs have plenty of cover that people will learn to use. What good is a bomber if its bombs dont penetrate the wall.... and as someone mentioned they will have a hard time getting close [for accurate carpet bombing you have to fly relatively low imo.. no laser guided stuff here].

Cumbersome, slow, defenseless to AA fire ... no more than a sitting duck imo, but as im yet to see it in action my opinion is rather subjective.

No mention made of its speed made yet, nor of its potential altitude capability

front and rear mounted chainguns to defend itself

crew needed is 3

carpet bombing a fully laden bridge anyone?

Will be awesome for clearing out heavily defended bases, destroying AMS and other slow moving vehicles. Imagine having a few of these at the Battle of Bitol the other night :)

Personally, i really looking foreward to trying it out :)

its altitude will be the flight ceiling IE 400ft

I must have misread .. it said pilot and 3 passenger capacity. Glaxy has 3 MGs attached does it help defend it ?
My post was more based on logic as PS develoers are not eager to share info, that was presumptious of me ,yes.. but from what i know about bombers is they Need escort and are vulnerable to AA fire, bare with me... considering the way programmers designed all the vehicles so far, it is not far from reality. Assuming that they took the same path when they designed other vehicles it is reasonable to suggest the logical facts... so once again Bombers need to fly low for precise carpet bombing... as for bridge situations , ive played this game since open beta and to be honest an AMs drive through the bridge <sometimes more than one attempt> clears it , and AMs requires 2 points for cert, one driver and is usefull in other ways than ramming whatever is on the bridge. Besides bridge situations are very rare, and so far only emerged on 2 islands ... Hossin and Cyssor.
What i meant by learning to use cover : position AMs under the bridges <the ones that connect central building and battlements, bombs dont go through the walls or hard surfaces>.

PS: Armour = extra weight, Bombs = heavy stuff, 3 people = medium to large size ship when compared to say mosq. And when i posted my initial post i probably should have explained every line of my reasoning more clearly, will do next time to avoid such misunderstanding.

PPS: Dmw, for high altitude bombing you would need way more than 1 bomber to achieve anything mate :)

Yeah, its kinda badly worded, it does say "3 passengers" but then goes on to say pilot, rear gunner and bomber, poor grammar :)

Usually find one big bridge fight per night, usually north of Bitol on Hossin.

During a big bridge fight, like we have seen on Hossin a few times in the past week you would be very lucky to get an AMS through in 1 piece. Several sunderers couldnt manage it, all it takes is 1 destroyed vehicle on the bridge and you wouldnt get through. Even if you did, you wouldnt survive on the other side :)

Attrition bombing is an excellent idea for a game with PS dimensions imo, okay its prolly a lil bit too strategic for most gamers style, but for an outfit campaign its kinda neat.

I can recall a heap of times when i had wished to be able to nuke an ants-nest of vanu or TR in a base, over a ridge, waste a hill line of snipers or destroy an ANT convoy in a single glorious movement :)

Oh i agree with you on the high altitude bit, was just saying i doubt they would be increasing the flight ceiling.

If anyone wants to think about the tactics needed for bombers just look to real warfare circa 1936-45.

Yeah but PS combat is vastly different to WW2.
Most of the time people will be bombing the hell out of anything that moves, friend or foe in large battles.
Be fine to soften up the front lines, a squad swarming in before the land forces move in to mop up., once that's done the bombers role is just to keep reinforcements away.

Anyone who just willy nilly flies over and takes a dump from a great height will probably find themselves in the shit with their own buddies and actually I was referring to things like fighter cover and advance waves of light aircraft clearing the airspace before the big guys hit. Will probably only be done right within outfits as has been said earlier on this thread though :)

Or were you just telling us how you will be doing it Mung? :D

Fear Teh Airman Mung!

Nah I can't fly a reaver with all the lag let alone a bomber. It's like flying through a sky made of jelly.
