Our living room is a bit tight and we're getting married soon so trying to come up with some wedding gifts.

Is it viable to replace a TV with an LED Projector (or non LED, but I thought LED because bulbs are expensive!), or does it mean you literally have to have the curtains closed and lights off for general TV watching?

if you're really in to movies then...maybe, but afaik a good 100+ Hz telly wil set you back several hundred notes in these enlightened times, whereas a projector that gives an equivelent image quality will be at least three times that amount. also, there is the point you raise of lighting: you need a pretty dark room, and preferably a wall spot that you treat to a nice and specific silvery-gray colour.

It has its upsides, huge ass screen etc, but it usually does require a dark'ish room and lights off.

With a nackground for it(for example brother had an empty white painting frame on the wall :p) it's mroe tolerable, but it's no TV.

With wallmounted flat TVs if you want to watch regular TV like a regular person, it's not for you.

I've had two projectors in my life but ended up sticking with a 52" Sony Bravia and have done so for a few years now.

The projector was awesome, as you would expect, for movies and for console gaming. TV wasn't bad, but you really needed an HD feed to get the wow factor on the big screen. In addition, it became a pain in the ass sitting with the blackout blinds down all hours of the day, even in the height of summer. Imagine sitting there on a scorching summer's day where you want to watch some brief TV (say, the 6pm news) - you'd have to darken the whole room just to do so. This also gets annoying when you're sitting in a room with a few people in it.

Superb for big screen movies / Fifa with your mates, but for daily TV use, stick with a TV. I do miss the big screen for movies, but the convenience of the TV is much more appealing as an all rounder.
