I tried this once, but everytime i started wiggling my fingers, someone carrying a tray of beers would bump into me before I managed to hurt anyone. They really have to do something about the interrupt code.......

Sadly not only in the US. You should see the situation here in germany. The whole state is on a headhunt against gamers.

One or two years back we had an incident with a 16 year old running Amok in his school, killling a lot of the teachers and in the end himself.
After this, the media claimed that the authorities found several (or one specific..can rememeber correctly) violent computergames in his posession, among it the well-known Counterstrike. According to them he "learned to kill while playing this game". It was then when the witchhunt began.
Suddenly all computergamers were intolerant freaks who do god knows what at their computers.

In the end a new law was made, that rates every game PG-18 unless it is tested and verified by the USK. Well, quite funny actually. For example "Rayman 3" is PG-18 aswell, just cause they didnt test it. So the only way to buy it, is at a well sorted computer store (after you showed you ID) or online.

It has been bad before that already. I usually prefer the english versions over the germans anyway. If you EVER saw the german version of Half Life, you know what I mean. ALL enemy humans have been replaced by robots and you cant accidently kill one of the friendly NPC's.
Theoretically there is a formular for german games (at least shooters): No blood, no violence and you may not shoot or kill humans.
The latest example I can think of is C&C Generals. The game was released in its original uncensored version here first (sadly that was BEFORE this new law was in place). It has been tested by a comission and they decided that it is supports and encourages war (not the original wording but I dunno what the english word for it is) - Therefore it was placed on an index. If a game is on this index it may not be sold, nor advertised to ANYONE, not even people who are 18 years or older.
Afaik Electronic Arts is currently pressing charges against that decision but until then they released a "new" version onto the market. Now it plays in a parallel universe, one of the campaigns is no longer playable, a LOT of the cutscenes have been stripped and if you see some ingame cutscenes ALL humans have been replaced by robots.

I've heard that you can't buy toy guns of any kind either in Germany and all GI Joe type dolls are banned as well, is this true?

It's probably for the best , Brits shouldn't drink and our German friends should never wear a uniform that includes jackboots.

And about the GI thing: yep, its true. When I was a kiddo I got a game called GI Joe on my good ol´C64. Never heard the name before and never heard it afterwards. Oh..as for the toy gun thing: Afaik you still can buy em here but I bought my last one quite a while ago so I am not really up to date on that.

probably, but the cops being trigger happy and it being normal to have a gun and it also not being so weird that you use a gun, will have a bigger impact. Btw this is about the usa.
Kids can learn how to work a gun from seeing dad or through television (news,movies, etc). So its not like games will train you in that, it wont make you a good shooter either.

It also says violent games are played elsewhere in the world where incidences of violent crime remain lower than in the US, suggesting the causes are not the games.

besides that i find it disturbing that as lawyer you think your chances increase significantly if you get your case infront of a jury instead of a judge. It isnt that surprising, but imo it points out a flaw in the jury system.

She says I worry her when I play it.

I think the final straw was when she caught me beating people up just so I could run off with bloody footprints on the floor.

gta3 does bring out the evil in me - I find myself stealing cars just to write them off and then sitting chuckling evilly about the results

We have porn, Films and games with +18 on'em, if a kid has seen these and shoots up a school and the people hold the games etc.. responcible imo it comes down to the parents not doin enough to stop them from watching or playing that stuff.

I wonder...

If you studied a bit of history, I bet you'd find cases of kids/adults going totally insane and doing things to people... 6 billion men on this planet. About 1 billion of them are children (Very rough estimate). Id say around 5% of them have played a violent computer/other game. Still leaves a shitloads of people. So far you've described 2 incidents, one in Germany and one in US. But Im pretty sure there has been at least 5 in the US, probably 2-3 around the globe (big enough to gather attention). So around 10 of fucking 10 billion go insane and suddenly games should be removed and kids should be put into pink prisons with no sharp corners.
