The reason you have to download the localised version is because the patches are localised, and the patch server is derived from the realmlist.wtf file. So if you have a US client and a fudged realmlist.wtf to point to EU, your patching will more than likely fail or you will have a client/server mismatch at some point.

Myself said:
You can always try changing the realmlist and delteing the cache files, but if you don't download the EU client beforehand, you might be kicking yourself if the Korean client doesn't work properly .... especially if it doesn't patch.

Many people reported that the patching of the US client failed. However, there are also those that have claimed to get the latest CB EU client working with the US retail server.

And its not testing by any means to "throw random variables" into the system. Remember, the account is localised, i.e. a US account key wont work on an EU client. Therefore to run a EU account, you need a EU localised client. Simple really.

If testing is not performed against a specific test specification, then random variables are acceptable. I see no official test specification originating from the Blizzard EU offices for each of the gamers to execute, thus beta testing is adlib, its certainly not controlled factory testing. At this late point it's more load testing anyway.

I know its a pain, I had to DL the US and EU clients, which on torrent was annoying. But honestly, its a ~2.5G download. If Blizzard had attempted to distribute that without a torrent straight from their servers, I'd probably still be in the queue.

Agreed, however not everyone shares the opinion, especially the users that waited for approximately a week with the official Blizzard downloader stuck at 87% (I forget the exact value, check the forums when they come back online if you are interested). One person even reported having uploaded several gig with only a few hundred meg downloaded ... not everyone knows what they are doing, some have bandwidth caps, and Blizzard needs to cater for them better.

Blizzard could well have made use of Fileplanet or similar, at least then people with download issues could have burned the data to CDs/DVD and had it sent to them.

The only way to be sure is to update the realmist file and try it. Do not bring duty as a beta tester into it, FB is just a facade by Vivendi to better figure out volume of potential sales prior to launch. Your job was done in this instance by telling Vivendi that you plan to purchase.

Anyways, try it and see Dommelsch it's the only way to be sure.

Of course, lets not forget people that we're bending over backwards for Blizzard here, in fact they should be paying us for playing on their servers for free before launch. Fuck it, I should be given a medal for downloading a seperate EU client in my own time.

Your playing time is their testing time. They aren't paying you a salary for testing their software. It may be a piece of recreational software, but it's simply a product that requires testing before it can be delivered into the marketplace. We pay our testers to test our software.

Your free play is you payment, it's a win/win business arrangement.

The Torrent system for the client download was a good move on Blizzard's behalf to distribute bandwidth and potentially reduce costs, however they could have made the client more configurable. It's also possible to conceive that they made the client saturate the upload in order to keep the client open longer and improve the data distribution.

The last released EU CB client (1.1.2) patches up to 1.2.1 as you know. It works perfectly fine with the US retail (just involves a one line change in realmlist.wtf). Nothing difficult to it. For EU FB I'll just be switching realmlist.wtf back to eu.logon.worldofwarcraft.com (or eu1.wow.battle.net , they resolve to the same place).

Nothing mysterious, nothing difficult.
