Latency... not good.

Ok one and all... i have a plea of the highest priority ;)

Unfortunately where i am based i have no alternative than to use dial-up to get connected to DAoC. I thought it would be more or less unplayable, but after trying it it seems ok unless i get into a busy area with lots of people...
(Guess i wont be Zerging!)

My Latency icon on the performance monitor (the middle one with the letter "L" in it, i presuem thats latency, in no expert on these things) is bad, when im sat down doing nothing in an area with little or no people i get the yellow triange, when im in fights, moveing around or generally doing something that turns to a red square.

So my question to all your techie guru's, hackers, and wannabe computer experts is how the 'ell do i improve this stat? Is there anything i can do on my PC to improve this, or maybe i can set something on my modem properties to help with this???

Getting the telephone company to improve the line is nigh on impossible and the first person to suggest i get highspeed net/broadband will be ritually sacrificed to a pagen god (its simply not available where i live, not yet.. soon i hope)

So... someone please help me, i want to get the best performance out of what ive got, i know i will never have a _good_ conenction but i want something a bit better than this!

Thanks In Advance...
(Kop Khun Cap - a clue to my location)

hello

i have the same problem re broadband...to far...not enough interest....wrong shape leaves.....

in the end to counter my lag i had to move over to ISDN [Home highway] but b4 i moved i did buy a nice new 56k modem...v92 one quite nice from a company called Zoom!

Now even tho this was a 56k modem it dropped my ping down to about 119 in Half-Life [from about 300].

So 1st suggestion [cheapest] try and NEW modem v92 one
2nd Suggestion go ISDN...expensive but u get a ncie 2nd phone line aswell

Unfotunately (or fortunately, which ever way you wanna look at it) i live on a tropical paradise island... ISDN is available but so far its in the price range of companies, not home users.

Wireless broadband is getting cheaper and more available, i might be able to end up with that in the next few months.. but for now its good olde dialup.

I will look into the v.92 modems and see if they are supported/available failing that i'm going to have to bring my pc in from home to the office and hook it up to the whopping 256k Satellite broadband (!?!) system (if only the boss would agree to that <sigh>)

Oh well, bugger that, im off down the beach...

make sure you have your modem settings optimised for fastest performance..there are loads of sites out there just search in google

make sure you have a decent quality modem (except the best modem I ever had was some shit make which had excellent performance so they kind of varry)

ensure you have a decent quality modem wire between your phone and modem
