Laser Eye Surgery

I'm thinking of getting this done in April, as I've had to wear glasses for the past 15 years and would like to be shot of them.

Has anyone here had this done, or know someone who's had it done? If so would they recommend it?

Ta peeps :)

I talked to a friend of my dad's down the pub a while ago who'd just had it done. He was about 50 and had one eye made short sighted and one eye made long sighted. I guess his eyesight was pretty bad in the first place. The idea of the two different eyes is that he can see far away and close up. He said it took a while to get used to.

I've considered this a few times but I'm told it's best to wait till well into your twenties (23 on mar 9th so not too long to wait).

It might be worth contacting a few reputable opticians and asking who they might recommend.

I think wanking is likely to be first there.

:p

I'm 26 atm (DoB: 22/09/75) so should be old enough that my eyes are fairly settled atm.

is it the appearance of wearing glasses you're bothered about, or just having them?

i'm sure you've already considered contact lenses etc, but surgery does seem drastic :)

Funny you should mention this, i've gotta run me mate to Manchester 2 weeks today to have said operation(800 quid per eye)so i should be able to tell you more then, only takes a couple of hours apparently.

Both really.

Think I'll go for Accuvision, as they seem to be the best at LASIK surgery. Calling it surgery is a bit of a misnomer though, because the whole procedure lasts about 1 min per eye.

This is the procedure in question, and it has a 94% complete success rate, resulting in patients having 20/20 vision. It's permanent, so it's a one-off treatment, and even though it costs about £1200 per eye, it'd be worth it imo. I have the money to get it done, so cost isn't an issue tbh.

He was told that it aint permanent and in later life he will have to wear glasses again, maybe he's using Dr Nick, as its 400 quid cheaper than the one you've found Sar

You want someone fucking about in your eye with a laser that could blind you ????

It won't blind meh, and with a 94% chance of 20/20 vision it's not really a huge gamble.

Put it like this, if I was told I had a 94% chance of being shot in the head in the next five minutes, I'd be bricking it :)

Dr. Nick, lol :D

I dunno matey. I wear glasses [since about a year] and tbh I'm quite used to them etc.
Thing is, if a 1 minute surgery could guarantee me 20/20 till I was 50 or so I'd do it in a flash heh.

Well that's why I want to get it done, cos I've had the glasses for 15/16 years now, and I'm sick of them. I tried contacts about 5 years ago, but couldn't wear them as they irritated my eyes too much. I found out last year I have an astigmatism in my left eye, which was the reason I couldn't wear contacts.

The treatment is permanent apparantly, but if it lasts for 25-30 years it'll be more than worth it.

Tis a lot of money but I've vaguely considered getting this done. If I had the cash lying about I'd do it, definitely.

Well I'll be getting more than enough to cover it when I leave BT, so I'm 80% certain atm about getting it done.

M8 of mine had it done last year and said it was the best money he had ever spent.

I do recall investigating at the time, and here in Ireland anyway, they were only really pushing it for people with very impaired sight (eg my m8 had those glashes with lenses so thick they seemd to distort the space-time continuum itself if you looked at him). He now has 20/20 and no need for glasses whatsoever.

Myself, I only have slight shortsightedness, so I wasnt too pushed.

You know that you can get contact lenses that accommm....accom...acommm...... work with astigmatism ?

My bro wears contacts and he has astigmatism - works fine for him.

drop him a PM - Inigo Montoya.

Nah, if it's the choice between contacts for life and the associated costs, or lasering them for a one off fee, I'd choose lasering them. One probably works out as much as the other over the long term anyway.

How much is a lifetimes supply of new contacts, solutions etc?

I heard that your night vision goes as a result of it. Whether its true or not is another matter.

What that's meant to be is glare some people get for a few months afterwards at night time when looking at lights. Like looking through a wet windscreen. It sorts itself out though, and is something I'd be willing to put up with, even if it's permanent.

Quorthon: My sight is pretty crap as well. For instance without my glasses on me I can only make out what I'm typing on screen to any useful degree about 8" from the screen without squinting. I'm in Belfast, so a quick flight to London and back to get this sorted isn't a major hassle :D

Munkey: What was the company in Chester called?

AFAIK your eyes change all the time, so the surgery may be "permanent" (until old age that is) or may only last a few years, but obviously if you have severe vision impairment then its well worth it.

If its just to correct short sightedness like I have then I personally would not go for it, my eyesight changes every time I get a new pair of specs (about once every 2 years atm), not drastically but enough for me to consider it may be a waste of time in the long term.

Consider how your eyesight has changed in the last few years and consider how much you've spent.

I don't think the risk is that great, they normally do one eye at a time just in case :)

Never heard anything bad about it, the only downside I can think of it is that you can't be in the RAF. When the leaseon (spelling?) officer came to try and caox us into the RAF he explained how if you had eye surgery it messes up the lense making it jagged rather than smooth so its hard to see in the dark sometimes. Can't say I do much of that anyway, but if you've got the money and you wanna get rid of your glasses then go for it.

What happens with the %6 of people that get it done though do they end up being blind or just crappy vision for the rest of their lives?

Watching it in the first place is far too much imo

Back to the subject...If I had the money I would definitely get my eyes done seeing as I've had glasses for about 4 years and I fooking hate them.

Crappy vision I think. Never heard of anyone being made blind by it, so if it can happen it's extremely rare.

And I could never be in the RAF. I'm shit scared of heights between 100 & about 2000 feet, so I'd have to fly the plane really low :p
