Large RvR = LAG

I run an OK pc and have ADSL, but the lag on the last few keep takes is just making it totaly unplayable.

from what i see its not just me.

Question:

If the gfx engine is so fooked and not optimixed for the game, will dropping resolution make a significant diff to this situation (ie 200+ peeps in a zone)

it wont solid i play 1024 res and i can handle 100 ppl with effects most times about about the same at 800 res yes there is a more powerful gfx engine coming with the expansion ppl have said its the same one used in elder scrolls morrowind.

From what I believe the engine draws everything on a character, every single bit of detail if it's on screen.

That means that even if you see a few pixles in the distance that are meant to represent a far away Norseman, the engine has drawn the Norsemans belt, his weapon, his face, his shoes.........everything.

This just makes the game slow when there are lots of people on screen at once, hopefully the new engine will sort these problems out.

Unlikely. The Morrowind engine runs at about 10 fps now. Make it render a battle with 200+ ppl in and I think it will reduce a gfx card to tears :)

It's a shame that a game that's designed for mass RvR cannot actually handle it :/

The servers can't, and the gfx engine definitely can't :(

Running a 1.6gig system with 512meg ram & a gf4 4400 and it drops as low as 1 rame per 2-3 seconds in something like the first of this month's relic raids :/ (and thats with effects self and names off)

The biggest problem is that how many of us will still be playing when eurodaoc gets the new engine ?

During beta, GoA stated end of April for 1.48 and then a few days after US patches for subsequent patches. We've all seen how long it takes em to patch, so with a November ETA on the expansion, we aren't going to see it this side of next easter :/

Well. I recently upgraded my system spec to:

P4-1700
Asus P4S533 Motherboard
Asus GeForce 4 Ti 4600
512MB PC2700 (333) RAM

And I have ADSL.

Now, the game runs better than before. But recently, I experienced SEVERE graphic lag, to the point that it was totally unplayable. Heck, I remember the EoB event and what utter mayhem that was. The graphic engine needs replacing fast. Because this one just cannot handle it, period.

Oh, and when there's a big RvR fight? Well, no matter where I am in the game, I get the ripple. Red ping, following by lots of yellow latency and yellow ping.

I have a slightly more powerful pc then that and i get real bad lag too and i got adsl yeah the graphics engine is becoming very unstable in most rvr battles now.

and just think we are only playing on a server with <1/3 capacity, imagine how it is on US? rofl, can u imagin this server with full pop? /em shudders at the prospect

I dont think they will replace the current gfx engine with the one from Elderscrolls: Morrowind... its the same engine just a newer version, but if u look at Morrowind, imagine the lag when 1000 ppl are in the same zone...

Im feeling the ripples of a large raid too, i think it was yesterday (wednesday) that midgard played a little keep take/retake in albion and i got severe lag while hunting pookas in Hibernia :)

I cant say my computer is as advanced as some of the above, but still im running a Dual PIII 1000, with 384 RAM and a GeForce 2 gts on a 10 mbit broadband connection.... still getting lag...

Hopefully they improve the gfx engine and i really hope someone else then me is around to experience the change :)

They have already annouced they are gonna use the latest NetImmerse engin, the very same that was used in morrowind

On my own computer, i run into regular frame rate and latency problems with a mere 10-15 people on screen. Thus you can imagine what large scale rvr does to it.
So i have taken to switching computers for the large scale action, since my housemate has a top of the range pc. And TBH once i switch effects to none on it, i can have about 90-100 people on screen and not even blink.

/effects command is bugged by Mythics own admission.

sometimes /effects self actually does what /effects none would do, sometimes /effects self dont even work and you can still see everyones spells, yesterday i spammed /effects self so many times and could get rifd of the damn avalonian caster's AE fireballs, most annoying

Yeah i can, since i played there for 4 months.

Lag was (for me) MUCH less of an issue on mythics servers.

Go figure :(

First off the version of the graphics engine we are running is about 2 years old, there is a much newer optimized version coming with the expansion. The current engine supposedly requires DirectX8 but is infact an engine wrote for DX7 and the version we have is largely unoptimised. None of the newer features of DirectX8 are used by the engine and hence newer cards are being limited by old and unoptimsed DX7 calls. The biggest problem is that the game uses a huge variety of textures but doesn't support any of the modern texture compression features so the AGP bus is saturated with textures/models during any scenes with lots of action and detail.

Guild cloaks are the biggest offender, during an average raid there will be 10 different guild emblem textures that can eat large portions of the graphics card memory, they have to be constantly swapped over the AGP bus as the need arises because the rest of the scene also requires huge amounts of textures. Basically all the the textures and models etc can't fit the graphics card memory along with a high resolution frame buffer so they need to be swapped in and out constantly, add 100 Mids to the equation and you can see why we get 3-4 fps when the shit hits the fan so to speak.
