This morning I was watching a youtube video on my laptop. It crashed and when I restarted it, it wouldn't boot.

Screen stays black and gradually turns white over about 30 seconds with a black block going down the middle.

Its an Acer aspire 5920g laptop.

I tried reseating the memory and giving it a good spray out with a can of compressed air but didn't help.

I have tried hooking it up to my PC monitor to see if its a monitor issue but it won't display anything.

How can I diagnose the problem? Anyone had this before?

Many Thanks

I can help you EXACTLY with this problem as I had the same thing happen to me with my 5920G. :)
Your graphic card has fried.

The astoundingly good news is that the graphic card is a discrete unit in your laptop and can be swapped out and replaced.

First of all hit eBay for a replacement card.
  • nvidia 8600M GT (this should be the one you already have in it)
    or
  • ATI Mobility Radeon HD3650
It needs to be MXM-II compatible

I got mine for about £60 last year but the availability is more limited right now.
This particular one ticks all the boxes. Right model, right size, not bad price and NEW! Many cards on eBay are used or refurb.

It really is that easy. :)
