Laptop Advice

In January I'm looking at buying a laptop. Looking to spend around £500 on one. Don't mind going a bit higher than that though.

Can you get a decent laptop for around £500? I don't want it for games really, just internet browsing, watching movies occasionally, and maybe some low-spec games (I know laptops are crap for games).

This is my first ever laptop so I have no clue about what brands of laptops etc. Don't really know anything about graphics cards either so I don't have a clue what I'm looking for.

If anyone with knowledge of laptops can help me would be much appreciated.

Oh I don't really want a massive 19" screen. I don't mind having one but the whole point of a laptop is that its meant to be small ehh? 15" is probably fine for me.

bought mine for 400 as i just got it to take to uni and work on. Think its a 1.8 core2do with 2gig ram, intergrated card. I decided to buy from pc world cos i couldnt be bothered faffing about anywere else, tho if u look around u may find a nice deal

I'm a bit of a fan of Toshiba laptops, but for 500 i might recommend this laptop. Especially if you bung xp on instead Luckily it's only running Vista basic so you won't have to worry about too much crap running in the background.

What i think will matter most is how good service you get on your laptop, and for how long that service lasts.

I would recommend Acer. If their service on laptops is just as good as on their projektors you'll be VERY happy. My projektor bugged up so i contacted acer, now theres a guy comming tuesday to bring it to repairs and then bring it back to me. Fucking ace service!

I have an 4 year old HP/Compaq NC6000, and tbh it's fucking awesome. I'm using it for exactly what you mentioned, browsing, watching movies & some lowspec games. You can probably get ahold of one very cheap and use the other spare cash for a stationary comp

Yes but that only lasts for an hour. You see this should last me 3 years at least.

I dunno if that X60i 17" Novatech laptop is any good Pikeh, the '£586.33 Inc Vat' one. You have to pay £40 extra for 2 years warranty with them too :/

edit: and pay extra for the operating system!



edit2: I might just go PC world in jan. I've heard you can get some good deals in there? Especially after xmas the prices should go down. I know the customer service is poor in there though.

I got one of these : ASUSTeK Computer Inc.
About 2 months ago.
Its tiny (dvd case sized) light and so very sexy.
It runs linux, which is supprisingly easy to use its fast (boots in about 10 seconds) and I love it lots and lots. Gaming is tricky, but I got it for work and movies and for that its awesome.
All this for 200 quid. Bargain!

You should be able to get a Celeron class laptop for £300, although it won't be that great. A Core 2 Duo laptop will set you around £425 and is probably about the best starting point unless you really don't mind using a Celeron.

Look around at places like ebuyer etc.

Word to the wise - Toshiba laptop batteries are shite. I've got a half decent one (for work admittedly) - core2duo blah blah and the battery life is 20 minutes after just under a year.

Acer support are a bunch of monkeys tbh! First time my gf's laptop was sent in i told them its the harddisk ! then we get it back an they have done nothing at all.. Well fine, i try an reinstall it an BAM boad , hmm gonna reinstall it again, an guess what boad again! then i send it in again an guess what ? they are gonna put in a new harddisk now.. Gonna be fun to see if they do it tho still waiting to get it back an they got it 2 weeks ago alsos waitet 2-3 weeks lasttime ..

Guess you get what you pay for.. DONT BUY ACER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

MacBook's are absolutely top notch.

I had an ASUS before and my father +brother both have one aswell, but I think they make a lot of noise, compared to my Mac.

If you want more than normal service, buy Dell. If you want to work only, then I really recommend spending the little more money for a MacBook, as they're fantastic =)
