So you all know how, in my spare time, I track down scrawny con artist runts, take photos of them adorned with willies to the police, and get their homes raided?

Fun fun.

Anyway, the past couple days I've had lots of reset password requests sent to my email account - for facebook, and msn live. Meh. Irritating, but feeble. Your haxor skills are weak, young padawan. But now I'm having a whole speel of loan requests, and loan registration letters, sent to me in various stages of being processed. The concern obviously being that scrotum face the wonder chav has my bank details, and my address, so if it IS him he'd have a bit of an advantage. They don't look like spam mails - I've had Kenny check them out too. My credit rating resembles an atrophying corpse in numerical form, so I doubt anyone would get far with this charade, but obviously it's a bit of a concern. I've contacted the companies involved, just to say an emphatic no, but I was wondering if you guys have any advice on how I can either a) protect myself a little better online or b) castrate people with the power of a single thought.

Talk to your bank and see if they can close your account and open a new one?

That's not a bad idea.

And again, a complaint to the police* saying "someone" is doing this, you think it's him, and would they kindly do their job and contact the companies in question, obtain the IP address this was done from, and then contact his ISP to obtain his IP address - and see if they match :)

*I know, I know, they'll tell you to "bollocks"...

I already contacted the police. "bollocks" is the paraphrase. They don't really get IT based issues, and all the internet fraud is dealt with an inhouse team of crack nerds, who never talk with the public -

I imagine them in a dark room, eating Pringles, and wearing "C:\Dos\Run" tshirts while they fight crime and read The Register

- so after turning to the police, who were nice, but chocolate teapot like, I consult you guys, my favourite band of geek mercenaries.

"C:\Dos\Run"

I lol'ed :\

Most banks offer some form of identity theft protection for £x/month, perhaps worth looking in to that if, God forbid, he's successful at fucking with your finances?

I wouldnt buy that - just get em to change your bank account number or close down that account and open a new one at a different bank altogether.

Edit - Oh and start a new mail account that you only use for trusted financial stuff - must have new tough password.

There are indeed a bunch of nerdly cops that look into this stuff but I can't remember the details. I'm sorry you are getting the shit end of this twit's very unimaginative stick.

Could make a Freddys House game of it. Post what details you have and let the FH users try one up each other on victimising him ;) Best one wins a prize. like a badge or blancmange or something..

You misread me, old bean. I think it's pure awesome that there's a dark corridor of the police force somewhere that looks like this. If it DOESN'T look like this I will be mega disappointed. I just wish they were easier to contact.

(By the by, I bought Kieran both the "No, I will not fix your computer" t-shirt, and one that simply says "meh." I <3 nerds.)

Anyway, I don't definitely know it's him. It's just obviously a concern if it is. The emails look legit (if they are spam mail, it's not a particularly good sell), and the bombardment of password reset requests certainly are real.

Bobby - it's going to court (I've been assured this again today) so I'll hold off the revenge until I discover whether or not my thirst for it can be legally satiated. But my god, what fun we could have :) Wonderful, naughty, hypothetical fun.

they are made to look very real. if you examine the actual hyperlinks on the pages you will usually find it is for a random website.

You wouldn't be protecting yourself, but the companies who the person concerned is attempting to defraud. Let him dig his grave.

They're real alright.

I'm not exactly sure what the person's trying to achieve. I mean you have to ASK to be sent a password reminder, it's not like it triggers it after so many attempts except to check if you do want a reminder to be sent. So what on earth are they getting out of it except to pass the time until their mum comes home with tonight's microwave meal?

Seems a bit counter productive to me if it is the same chap who's tried to rip her off since he's just making things worse for himself since there's a chance they'll be able to trace the IP the requests were sent from.

Reminds me (a little) of the serial cheat we used to have on the BW CS servers back in the day. As well as cheating they exploited a hack to constantly crash the servers. Then someone managed to find out his name and home phone number..... which got pasted into irc.

Think about 50 people called his house and ordered various things to be delivered.

But then, he is a retard.

Nail/head stuff going on there.

Aye. But only if the police take it seriously. I'm stumped about how to get them to do so, tho.

It seems to me that any law that doesn't allow the general public to make a complaint is a bit Nazi - as corporations/governments request and get IP address stuff done as a matter of course.

Maybe ask your legal representative? (Even court appointed lawyers must be able to be cajoled into it?)

If its going to court, shouldn't you inform whoever's handling the case? Looks like a (half-arsed) attempt to intimidate a witness to me. The cops won't care about the actual hacking attempt, but they will care about that.

its not just a matter of that though. there is the issues of collateral intrusion etc if tracing personal details to an IP/phone number.

Yeah, I did try to contact him, but he's off for the next few days and while I spoke to someone else who is very lovely I don't think anything will be done. It's just with requests for password resets coming every hour, and applications in process, I was rather keen to get the ball rolling ASAP :) I will get in touch with him as soon as he's back. The guy that's investigating this isn't nerdy either though. He's a NPT officer?? Dealing with multiple cases of internet fraud? Seems a little odd to me, but I don't really understand the breakdowns of jurisdiction.

Anyway, it'll take a bit more than this to stop me going to court. Oh noes, he's terribly inconvenienced me!!

I've already picked out my party hat.

Report it to your bank manager and the banks offering you the loans, let them know you suspect that it is this guy, they take fraud very seriously as it costs them millions each year. If it is the scrote from ebay then chances are he would be prosecuted by the bank and it certainly won't look good in your case against him.

The police should take it seriously and issue you with a crime number, if they don't then take it higher.

I think this is the nail hit on the head, come at it from a witness intimidation point of view, they will HAVE to take you seriously then.

You can register with CIFAS to protect yourself: Protective Registration - CIFAS Online

My Dad had to do this (50+ year old white guy) after a chap (20ish year old non-white guy) tried to steal his identity using a fake passport with photo by walking into a branch of PC World and trying to get £10k worth of PC's on credit.

Unfortunately if you do it, it means that any form of automated credit is generally refused to begin with, i.e. you'd never be able to sign up for a credit card online, as this marks your credit record as requiring a more strict check before anything is approved.

That not bad if you want the extras cos separately they cost way more than that, especially the insurance.

However if you read the FAQ it mentions if you're at risk, they register you with CIFAS :p

I don't like these credit protection schemes. Previously it was in the remit of the banks to protect your money. Now that the banks offer such easy loans, they can't be arsed looking after your cash and are trying to offload the job onto us. Or charge us for something that they were originally set up to do...

Definatly a good Idea,
They may or may not follow up on it,
but
A: It dosent cost one self a whole lot of Inconveniance to do so,
B: It'll Pre alert the bank if something more seriose occours.
C: Clears your back somewhat if he/they are every successful.

so basicly it's "cheap" and well worth the effort.
