hello ladies.

built a new pc a few weeks ago and have had problems with playing games online ever since. basically, i get a phonejack/lag spike periodically which drops my connection out for a second or two.

it seems to happen when i see an enemy, particularly in CS:S - this makes shooting people quite difficult...

i'm using wireless, no other networks around here - i have two neighbours within a mile and neither have wirless - and am on nildram. never had a problem on my old rig, so i'm hoping it's something i've forgotten to do when building this one.

cheers

I doubt they hate you, as the wifi is only up to your router I guess. could be many things Mank, a slightly different driver for your wireless adapter, etc. I had it in CSS a couple of months ago, where the whole game would freeze for up to a second or even more, and I'd just end up dead. What I did was reinstall CSS through Steam and move my wifi dongle from my monitor to a USB port on my mobo. That seemed to sort it for me.

I am in the same boat 2, but I have managed to get by....just about, did have a problem like that with my old Belkin Wireless adapter but in the end I bought a 3Com one and it fixed all the problems, and the only time I get any noticable lag is when my flatmate decides to d/l large files.

Hi mank!

No amazing insights, I'm afraid, I can only recommend making sure you have the latest drivers. Also, for your wireless connection, are you letting Windows handle it or some software which came bundled with your wireless router or card? You may want to consider switching, just to see if it makes any difference (some manufacturer's software is awful, whereas some actually improves the experience, so it's rather hit and miss).

Kind regards

i have a suspicion it's nildram, as it appears they've gone vastly downhill since the tiscali takeover...

i updated the firmware on my router (netgear d834g) last night and it seemed to make a slight improvement. i'm using the windows wireless component, will have a look at using the bundled tool - it's a wireless card which came with my old mobo.

another thought is that the router is downstairs and i'm upstairs - would it be worth investing in a wireless signal booster or are they a bit pointless?

cheers

Usb slots on monitors are part of a usb hub and do not supply the full voltage to usb devices - I can't charge an ipod/mobile from it. Other than that, go break all your neighbours' microwaves or something.

Tiscali are shite, I'd say it's probably them. You may want to check with a speedtest, or see what your ping to servers is like. You might want to change ISP, there's a thread in general about it.

Tiscali have been doing stealth LLU migrations to get Nildram customers onto the Tiscali network instead of Nildram/BT IPstream in order to cut costs.

Maybe check with some pings, traceroutes and a few downloads as well.

i'm using the asus wireless utility instead of the windows setup and it seems to have improved considerably.

Seems fine, but you are on a Tiscali LLU connection. Check at the times you're having problems.

Have you tried viciously thrusting your cock into one of the spare router ports?
