whellp, I'm currently at home, waiting about for some company to deliver my beautiful couch, and after puttering about for a bit, you know, doing things one tends to do while waiting on an early monday morning like eating a cheese toastie, turning the washing machine on, making sure there actually was space for the couch (it's one of those "round the corner" things). well, I made sure there was space yesterday when I was cleaning the entire house and mopping the floors and stuff, but I made sure again, just to be, uh, sure.

then I thought it would be time for a cuppa, so espresso machine on, hum happily, go look outside while it warms up, etc. then back to the machine....aaaaaaaand pause. the coffee bin, where I store my coffee in air-tight goodness seems light. it is also soundless when I shake it. hmm. hmm. there doesn't seem to be any coffee in it. in fact, I can see this all along, because the bin is transparent, but I refused to acknowledge this obvious truth because, well, something might be causing me to be unable to see coffee, or the special shade of brown that is Arabica, or a pixie may be hiding the coffee, or, or, or the bin may really actually be empty.

the horror! I have no espresso! and it's frigging monday morning, meaning the shops won't be open till, like, one o'clock or somesuch! well. so. um. like the frantic coffee addict I can be when it's time to be one, like when there is none to be had, like now, I turn the kitchen upside down in a search for the brown goodness. while swearing softly but fluently. yes!! I have it!! hidden away, in an open(!) paper(!) bag is some regular coffee(!!) I keep for those strange people who bitch about my coffee and other people who I generally don't like. I take the bag with trembling fingers and sniff it. Hmm, absolutely stale, almost no aroma. hmm. There's just about enough to fill the espresso filter, but I'm already having bad thoughts as I press it down with my press. The beautiful liquid jets into my glass. There is steam, there is crema, the colour is very dark, almost pure black. All seems well.

It tastes horrible :(

As I sit here drinking my Latte I feel for you Teedles, I have so much coffee in my house I simply don't know which one to go for next, but I am quite sure it will be espresso after you mentioned it.

heh how you torture me Trem :(

I'm at work now, the couch is in place, four large men lugged it up three flights of spiral staircase for me, but that aside, I'm now having to drink work coffee, which tbh is only slightly worse on the palate than the disgusting leftovers my habit forced me to consume this morning :/

How to annoy TdC in one easy step.

I work just literally round the corner from a coffee shop that does everything, espressos, latte's, americano's, etc etc

as in 20 yards away from its entrance

im that close to proper brewed coffee every day :)

This is a discussion about coffee, not powered shite!

I usually buy Illy coffee from Costco, but if not theres a place a few miles away that grinds the beans in front of you, they're pretty good. They also sell pork pies with cranberries, and pork pies with cheese.

mmmmm, cheese

In other news, I'm going downstairs to use my ridiculously overpriced Gaggia by stuffing it full of Guatemalan beans and pushing a button.

move to a country with shops that open at correct times? sheesh. It sucks here in malta too tbh tho, nothing open on a sunday at all and stuff closes around 6-7 weekdays.

Over second and third cups flow matters of high finance, high state, common gossip and low comedy. [Coffee] is a social binder, a warmer of tongues, a soberer of minds, a stimulant of wit, a foiler of sleep if you want it so. From roadside mugs to the classic demi-tasse, it is the perfect democrat

How dare you ?

Carte Noir instant acually tastes nicer than most shop-bought espresso-based coffee. It's not like having a jar of Maxwell House.

Admittedly a good freshly-made espresso is the best non-alcoholic drink in the universe but that doesn't mean that any espresso is better than any instant.

P.S. :twak:

P.P.S. powered shite ???

good for you. well, I had "coffee" at work, which is the name the machine has for light brown water that tastes vaguely of something that is certainly not coffee.
then as the proper coffee shop was ofc closed by the time I was homeward bound, I got some Illy from the supermarket which, while not really on a par with the usual stuff certainly isn't bad. A bit rough imo, but not bad.

This would have been my approach. I'm sure a cuppa and some white widow are an excellent way to start the week.

Carte Noir is nothing more than a fancy jar with a posh label, inside rests the same grim substance as what can commonly be found crusting around the bunghole of Satan.

You need to get rid of your kettle and buy a coffee machine. Then drink proper coffee.

Step into the light Wij, the darkness will consume you....
