Kerbie/Curbie

Does anyone remember playing this game as a kid, round our way it was called "kerbie" ("curbie"), so regional variations could apply.

Basically two of you got a ball, normally a tennis ball or football, and stood either side of the road and took it in turns to throw the ball at the other kerb, the objective was to hit the kerb dead on and make the ball shoot into the air.

You got a point for doing so, but in some rules if the opposition caught the ball as it came back down it was negated.

Nowdays, because of the huge amount of cars we have, you'd be hard pressed to find a side road with two vacant kerbs opposite each other, so I suppose the game has died.

I remember playing this as a kid. Kids round our way still play it, although the inter-throwing exchanges have changed somewhat.

"I caught that"

"No you fucking didn't"

"I bloody well did"

"Fuck off"

"No. You fuck off"

"I'll tell your mum you said fuck"

"Fuck off"

etc etc.

Makes for great entertainment.

We called it kerbsies

If you hit the curb and managed to run in and catch it before it touched the ground, it was 2 points.

If you caught it after it bounced off the floor back to you, it was 1 point.

At that point you'd then move to the middle of the road, and take a shot from there, same rules as above (regarding 1 or 2 points), and if successful you'd then go back to the pavement and take a shot from there

Hit the kerb, then move to the middle and continue throwing it at kerb. Miss from there and the other person could try and catch the ball and hit you with it before you ran back to your own kerb. If other person suceeded in hitting you, you lost all your points.

No wonder the game has died ! I can remember as a kid playing in the street all day and possibly seeing one or two cars, now when I visit my mum in the same old house you'll be lucky to see less than 2 cars per minute.

I also remember the police turning up to disband our game of cricket we were having in the street, they had a problem with us using a real cricket ball, if it had been a regular tennis ball no-one would have cared, but you so much as breath on today's cars and some spotty charver would be after you with a handgun.
