I'm watching the debate on extending the current 28 day detention limit to 42 days and Keith Vas is currently speaking.

Honestly, I'm so angry at him I hope someone slightly less balanced is watching. If he's comfortable with a 42 day limit then lets have an act of terrorism worth it. I'm encouraging any whacko out there to blow this fucker up.

It's apparent from watching this debate that the government hasn't got a leg to stand on. It's legislation motivated by fear and cowardice and a good dose of not caring for possible collateral damage.

I'd have posted something coherent but I'm boiling inside right now....

I suppose the only comfort I've got is that occasionally some labour backbenchers are shouting bollocks at him for his bare-faced lies...

5000 people die from MRSA annually.

I don't see anyone asking for 42 days to detain hospital managers for that.

I heard some silly twat white van man Essex bloke on the radio this lunchtime; "police should get as much time as they like, no smoke without fire is there?" I was in serious danger of grinding my teeth right out of the top of my head. They do say people get the government they deserve...

Council spy cases hit 1,000 a month - Telegraph
....lots of stuff we should all be concerned about.....

The scary stuff is that Keith Vas is presenting himself as some sort of libertarian in that article - as he was doing today in parliament.

There's cloak and dagger politics going on in this country at unprecedented levels :(

In an effort to post something coherent I thought I'd give myself a break before re-entering this thread but I've realised that my piss is still boiling so hard it's time for me to leave again.

I fucking hate blighty. :(

Scary stuff, huh? Hecklers silences under terrorism laws, protests restricted, ID cards still being worked on, referundums being refused, and the 42 days being proposed. Roll on the general election.

This is the VERY REASON that we can't allow this sort of shit to go on. People are so willing to put their trust in to the authorities and just assume the powers won't be abused, when they CLEARLY FUCKING WILL.

ARGH, WHY ARE PEOPLE SUCH FUCKING RETARDS?

So the big deal here is that theres a law which anyone can be arrested for? Or is it only that they want to extend it by 2 weeks?

imo its the extending it bit. theyre getting around the human rights act to imprison who ever the fuck they want.
someone could be in prison for 42 days then they turn around and go "soz, wrong person".

i think its similar to this "carry a knife and you WILL BE prosecuted" stuff, at least thats how the media says it is. i think thats a load of shit too.
what if i just bought it from tescos?!

I think thats taking the law out of context a bit tris, there not going to stop a woman who just bought a knife from Tescos, has the receipt, carrier bag and price tag still on it.

I think it's too long personally but I laughed earlier. Was shown a graph showing the different lengths of detention with the UK being the highest (obviously).
The comparisons? Lots of other countries like Sweden, France, Greece etc.

Who in gods name want's to terrorise that lot? At least the UK is suitably full of gits to want to terrorise :(

No. The big deal is that since the time of the Magna Carta the "state" has had 7 days with which to charge us for any arrestable offence.

Since Labour came to power that doubled and then doubled again - to 28 days. Yet another piece of legislation that trashes the whole "idea" of liberal Britain that's been around for hundreds of years. So much for responsible government.

Now, despite no case ever requiring 28 days before charging the government wants to extend it again - "just in case".

Gah. I've a good case to make but my girlfriend's here now so I'm gonna watch some Deep Space 9 and get pissed :D

Of course, because Labour MPs care more about keeping their faces buried in the trough than standing up for the things they used to insist they stood for. Why bother going against the grain?

Almost makes it worse that it was such a close vote - 315 to 306.

I don't see this as an anti-Muslim thing really, just an anti-people thing. If it was brought in specifically for terrorist issues (as they claim) it wouldnt be such an issue, but it's the (further) abuse of peoples rights that I object to.

Indeed. What's particularly galling is that there are existing laws that would allow police to hold suspects for more than 28 days anyway, they just have to get leave from a judge. Now if the police haven't got enough evidence after 28 days to get an extension from a judge, why are they going to have enough evidence after 42? If anything, this takes pressure off the police, which actually isn't a good thing; evidence trails tend to get colder after time, not hotter. This whole thing smacks of pressure from the police to make their jobs easier, not to ensure we're "safe" (whatever the Hell that means).

I agree it's not anti-muslim legislation - but they're definately the ones that are going to suffer most under it. If you'd watched the debate you'll have seen the opposing MP's saying pretty much that.

One of the Labour rebels was an ex Northern Ireland chap who understood perfectly well that increasing the number of days we can hold people without charge plays into the hands of terrorists and will actually make Britain less safe.

But then, it's never legislation against terrorists they were after. It's after stronger controls over the general population - unrest is on its way in the coming decades - and they're going to use this law to keep us in our place (along with all the others that Nazi labour put in place not long after coming into power).

Conservatives would have done the same IMHO.

Each day that passes, another nail in the Labour coffin, and another day closer to the day we can do something about them.

This country is in intolerable disarray.

Some might say that was pretty convenient timing.
