stupid question i know and i have used laptops before for a couple hours at a time, but im gonna build a new pc from scratch in august/september and am gonna ebay my main rig this weekend. all i'll have left for the time being is a toshiba F30 125 lappy as my main pc. someone on irc suggested taking out the batteries and leave it plugged in at the mains. nut too sure why that would help

any advice would be welcome

i've left my lappy on for weeks at a time, but is very old

taking the battery out is a good idea

give it a whirl, if it gets too hot, don't leave it on

oh, and lappy HDDs can have shorter life expectancies than PC ones

They do have a shorter lifespan, but not anything that you'd notice even from "constant" usage.

I would agree with removing the battery and setting up some conservative power saving options - i.e. things like keeping the fan on permanently, turning the disc off after 10 mins etc (of course, if you can)

The trouble is with laptops - everything is crammed into a very small space, and heat will be an issue with heavy usage or high uptime - especially in the current weather. How that will actually affect you will depend on the laptop, how well the heatsinks are applied etc, luck of the draw.

Perhaps leave it on for a couple of days to start with and see if you notice anything unusual like the fan being louder or "grinding" a bit, or if performance has dropped substantially.
