I've done a few martial arts, karate, kickboxing and (most recently) ninjitsu. Must say that karate seemed the most "sport like", kickboxing second (mixed with actual useful self-defence) and ninjitsu the scariest shit of them all.

I stopped doing ninjitsu pretty early on. My mate (marine) still returns with huge bruises and an inability to walk every time though ;) "If you've never been punched properly, how are you going to manage in a fight?" was one of the teachings there.. eek /o\

FFS there's always some nerdy get trying to convert the conversation into computers. We're discussing a real life active contact sport/art, you carry on with your flickering screen while some of us get fit.

Grrrrr

Anyway, it seems that trying to keep up with the flexibility of the black belts has led to some damage to my thighs. I'm going in for a grading in ju-jitsu on friday so I hope Im fit for it.

I believe judo is the most ridiculed of the martial arts as its only effective in defense, and most throws are only effective if you are grabbed first.

As a rule, martial arts suffixed with -do indicate the "sport" or "art" version, whereas "-jitsu" is the offensive version, a good example is ju-do and ju-jitsu, both are very similar except you do a lot more damage in ju-jitsu, i.e. you try and throw people onto their head.

Whilst -jitsu martial arts might sound more appealing, remember that as well as practising some nasty moves on people, they also get to practise them on you. One of the main reasons I gave up ju-jitsu and reverted back to karate was having to give my arm to a neanderthal in the hope he'd not break it.

That is not to say -do martial arts cannot be offensive, I believe tae kwon do is in fact more or less like full contact karate (they are different styles however), and it also appears as an olympic sport. Most karate classes will also teach "brawling" moves as part of self-defence, and general techniques to use in sparring and competition, which are easy to adapt for offensive fighting.

I learned (well tried) a style of karate called Gojo Ryu. This style is offensive/strong, in that the idea is the disable your opponent very quickly, and keep distance between you and him. An easy example would be that when punching to the face, you in fact aim at a point approx 12 inches behind their head. Sounds simple but this, with a correct punching style has saved my ass several times. If done correctly your opponent hits the deck hard with one punch, and stays there.
However I got into a ruck with two guys years ago, put them both down, the first guy attempted to get up again (although only semi conscious) and I put him away again, with force, I thought I had killed him. I had lost control, a serious error brought on by booze.
Since this incident (18 years ago) I have only once faced a guy off, a spaniard when I lived there, but he threatened me with a knife, but even then I explained that what he was doing was a very bad idea. I walk away now, much more sensible, as the idea of doing time does not appeal to me.

I was taught by a guy who was the son of a Mauri Warrior, and who had graduated at the Tokyo school of Karate (6th Dan iirc), he was very very good and built like a barrel. He explained to me once that learning the moves is like learning the alphabet, the next step is to put words together and then sentences. He was a deeply philosophical guy who I had great respect for. I saw him in "offensive" mode several times and his control of mind/body was awesome. Unfortunately he died of natural causes last year, 100's of mourners were at his funeral.

The point of my ramblings is that learning a martial art can be good for you, it can teach you self disipline, keep you very fit, but can also be very dangerous if used incorrectly.

You get a guy on the floor then you're in control. Having been kicked in the head a few times whilst on the floor I would recommend you avoid being there.

but more realistically

in which order would ppl take up the following:

-Feng Shou [Hand of the Wind Kung Fu]
(as opposed to feng shui - fortuitious wind - don't start :p)

-T'ai Ji Quan [T'ai Chi boxing or somesuch?]

-Tae Kwon Do

-Aikido

-Ju-Jitsu

-some form or other of Karate

as these are the options available to me in my area....

It would depend on whether you want to keep fit, have flashy moves or be able to look after yourself. Each variant has different qualities grasshopper :)

Aki-do, Ju-Jitsu and Judo are all forms of the same thing, with priorities on different aspects (Judo = lots of throwing onto the floor for example). They were created in old Japan to enable Samurai to fight if disarmed. Aki-do looks the prettiest, as it involves lots of swirly stuff, but is probably the most bone breaking of the 3. Lots of using opponents weight and momentum too.

Ju-Jitsu is probably better for most situations (you don't need as much room to cave someones head in than Aki-do) although combining Ju-Jitsu and Aki-do would be (like one of the guys I train with does) particularly nasty.

Karate is basically kicks and punches as far as I'm aware, although balance and control are also major factors. Karate is also probably more physically demanding.

Not sure what the others are coz I've never looked into them.

Best idea would be to find what nights they're on and then do 2 of them that don't clash time wise. I'm lucky, coz where I train they teach a bit of Karate and Aki-do as well as Ju-Jitsu, so its a pretty well rounded art I'm learning.

I do WTF taekwondo. I'm no expert, having only taken it up recently, and to be honest the only reason I took it up over another martial art was because there is a class at Esporta (where I'm a member), so I don't have to pay for it.

Having said that, 'newbies' who think they are going to become elite ninjas in 6 months, or who say that "x is shit, use y if you want to kill someone in seconds", are kind of missing the point. Most martial arts are more sports than mystical fighting skills nowadays. If you take any of them up you'll find your fitness, flexibility, reaction speed and reflexes will increase. You'll learn to deal with aggressive situations correctly, and defend yourself.

Different arts were developed for different reasons, hence the differences in technique and forms. But none of them are taught now with the aim of killing people, for obvious reasons. If you go down to your local training centre/dojang/etc with those "priorities" wolfeh, they'll laugh you out of the place.

shadow - which style of tkd do you study?
