just got back from my first lesson of karate and I must say I am absolutely knackered. My muscles ache more than they do after a good workout at the gym. I've been practising ju-jitsu for a while now and Im nowhere near as knackered after a session of that. So now I can now start punching and kicking my way out of a fight as well as twisting arms and shoulder throws.

So if you wanna stay fit take up karate.

Karate is for pussies.

You'd be better of ditching it and taking up Tae Kwon Do.

I did Karate around 10 years ago for around three years, didn't get very far (4th Kyu) but it was fantastic exercise and got me very fit, although I didn't realise it at the time I had joined a very strict and tough school, I'd have certainly been close to black belt had I chosen an easier school.

I restarted it last year and its a lot tougher at my age, but good exercise all the same, I don't expect to reach black belt this time though as it requires a lot of dedication. The first time I was going 2-3 times/week with occasional extra sessions, this time I can barely manage every week :(

Surprizingly Karate develops muscules without the need for weight training, I completely gave up using weights for my legs as the stretching exercises in Karate did the job fine. Karate will develop upper arms but not as much as weights. Most Karate is practised on bare floors with no shoes, so you get ultra-tough skin on your feet as well.

Karate also develops other aspects as well, your confidence gets a massive boost, when you've had to face a 6' gorilla with a black belt in sparring sessions, suddenly your little fat balding boss doesn't seem so intimidating any more, that helps in negotiations. :eek6:

Another side benefit from Karate is mental agility, doing the kata and kumite helps promote your ability to think sequentially, when you fight there is not a lot of time to think what to do next, so you need to be able to formulate attack sequences quickly, this is better than just learning reflex moves. This skill is useful in everyday life too, as we all go through routines and such, it all becomes a lot easer when your mind is trained.

Later on in my life I did partnered dancing (Jive, Salsa, etc), although a world away from Karate I found that the dance step sequences where very easy to pick up, due to my years of kata, learning routines is very easy for me now.

I wouldn't promote Karate above any other similar martial art, I also did Ju-Jitsu for a while and a bit of Tai Chi, the important step is getting a good school or instructor.

aye, true that. on a downside, something I have found with some of my friends who study martial-arts is that their ego seems to also boost. this seems to especially hold true when the more agressive styles are being introduced by the sensei.
not all of them, mind, but some seem more susceptible than others. have you seen anything like this?

I did Karate years ago for a while. They made me exercise all the time :(

Knuckle pressups and stuff for most of the lesson. Virtually no fighting. Since I was about 10 at the time I wanted to learn ninja skills not actually put in the effort to make sure I was strong enough to do anything :) Consequently I gave it up as soon as I thought I could get away with it (after about a year, I'd made my Mother pay out for a suit after all) :)

Couldn't agree more. I did kick boxing for a few years, absolutely no spiritual aspect or anything like that, but a good bunch of mates and a fantastic instructor. Great fun and I got really fit and strong. Best off, when the session was over we all went to the pub, and stayed there till well after closing time into the early hours, ah happy days....

Heh, I forgot I did kick boxing too, that was really good for me because it was in the works gym and I got to know a great bunch of people who worked here. The instructor was sh*t hot, but unfortunately he had to abandon the class after they promoted him to gym manager, sadly his replacements were not as good.

One other thing I remember, when I first did Karate, one of the group decided to have a go at a "Reebok Step" class next door, which was all the craze at the time, and we all joined in, needless to say even though this was the highest grade of "Step" and we'd just finished a Karate lesson, none of us even raised a sweat.

Karate certainly helps stamina, its on a par with Swimming for that, and you only realise it when you get graded for a belt because you are pushed into each move one after the other without the instructor interrupting, other than sparring I have never been so knackered than after a grading session.

I'm doing Ju Jitsu with Ig, chose that partly because there are no Kung Fu clubs ANYWHERE near us and also Ju Jit is better than most in the bar room brawl situation that always seems to kick off right next to me. Thinking about doing Karate, not sure though.

I did Judo for three weeks. I had issues with having to somersault in front of the class. I was like, seven.
I wish I'd done ballet as a child, thats nice.

I've done Kendo for a bunch of years now, used to be a part of the UK Kendo team. I'm currently a second Dan and have got another year to go before I can test for the next Shinza. It's a fantastic work out, and unlike most people assume it's nothing like Fencing which is mostly foil point based, Kendo is primarily based around slices. Your best bet if you want to try it out is to find a local dojo and see if they offer an introduction. My dojo runs a 10 week course with a Shinai (the bamboo sword) that you can keep for £56.

Edit; Don't do Kendo if you want to be able to beat people up in pub fights, unless you walk around with an umbrella at all time.

I've been doing karate for 5 months now, did it for 2 years or so as a kid... it is a great work-out, but one of the things our teacher teaches is humility, so the ego's aren't that rampant in our school :)

Munkey, scuba diving fucking rocks m8 !! Me & my missus did our padi open water course in April in Aqaba, one of the best experiences ever !!

One of my friends did judo and became a european silver medalist.
He was invincible on the rugby pitch because he was so flexible and did all these funny moves, and everyone was too afraid to start a fight with him in case he did some judo shit...
