Only because of the ludicrous strafejumping in it
HLDM is fairly paced, if you have a clue what you're doing.
Plus its easier to be faster in HL than it is in Q2, don't need to actively learn to strafejump.
I'd go back to HLDM for a nostalgic visit (once upon a time it was all I played, I r0x0red at Tau) if it wasn't for them changing all the commands a couple of patches back and rendering all my tweaks (bar 2; in a list of about 70) obsolete.
Tossers fiddled with the DM aspect too, cunts.

Uhh. CS is slow. I played HL DM pretty much as soon as it came out, and though I enjoyed it (it was novel) you felt like you were lugging around a bag of bricks. Jumping was half-hearted, and running wasn't really.

I played HLDM the other day to see whats its like, and i realized something, due to my extreme familiarity with HL Weapons and physics (I still play SP HL, Add on packs and mods)... I kick ass!!

The tau is shit now though, the mp5 arc was reduced so you can jump into it (flidishly) etc.
Netcode was appalling aye, but once I tweaked it (er, very extensively) I could get it running extremely smooth (for 20fps, anyway) ... man fear my 7fps Using tau on bootcamp ://////

My suggestion though would be to go with either Half-Life or Quake 3 just because of the sheer number of mods that are out there which can change the game if you don't like it how it is.

UT - is nothing like Unreal 'cept for the engine. Best CTF mode money can buy
Q3 is faster and prettier than UT and has Rocket Arena 3, a great mod.
CS is cool if you have patience and prefer realism and can put up with all the lamers on public servers. I don't see why people go on about the dated engine cos i think it looks lovely (using openGL).

Nibbler - you speak reasonable amounts of truth about the games except you say Q3 is faster than UT. In UT CTF the translocator makes it very fast paced
