This looks like nothing more than a public 'My willies bigger than yours'. I think some of the points he made were quite justified, oh and bandwidth means for a smoother game and, I'm pretty sure you still use a 4500 rate on a CM ... seeing as you don't use 'any more bandwidth' or whatever.

Er no, its called laying into someone but being wrong at the same time.
Bandwidth wise i use 3.5k/sec...exactly the same as my ISDN even though I run a slightly higher rate. As Ch3tan pointed out its limited to 7000 which happens to be only 500 more than I ran on ISDN.

I was under the impression that the BW columns were supposed to be about gaming, not just a way to slag off whatever gets your goat this month, or arguing with the other columnists (remember you and vuz{t} arclight?), etc.

Any games player knows you should use rate caps to make sure people dont hog all the bandwidth.

Your colum supplies one, you state that its Cs players with massive rate settings hogging teh bandwidth. YOu blame CS players for negatively efefcting teh performance of our own servers.
But the problem is, that your one and only supplied reason is flawed. HLDS does let u limit the rate server side. Bw have this around 7000 i belive. So CS players are not eating up all teh bandwidth. Teh fact that these lag problems happen when the server is full of modem users as well is a point you ignore.

Also it took long enough and plenty of moaning by ME before the rate cap was downed from 10k to 8K in Quake3.

As long as I have been using bw cs servers (since about last september) there has been a cap to my knowledge.
Teh argument doesnt stand because jolt manage to give stable and low pings wether the server is full of broadbanders or not. BW used to as well.
If the problem was broadbanders eating too much bandwidth wouldnt we have seen a stable decline rather than the overnight change from low pings, to erratic lagging? level3 seem to have really fallen in providing bw good peering (is that technically correct?). Thnkfully it should be fixed when BW move at the end of teh month.
I would understand your argument if this only happened at peak times when servers were full, but it manages to happen when its quiet as well.
