At my last employer (a telco ) it was so locked down when I joined that I couldn't even access the company's own consumer webmail service. Which was a bit of a problem as that was one of the products I was responsible for. Its opened up a lot now though as they have a new md who bloody tweets every five minutes.

At my new place I can pretty much look at anything I like but I can't change the wallpaper on my desktop. Go figure.

But at our place it's really silly, because we are allowed to use facebook, in fact sometimes it's needed for our job. And some forums are fine to browse into just because there's no mention of "games" anywhere on the site, lol.

At our place, we have certain numbers we have to reach every month, so it's up to you how you spend your time.. if you dilly-dallied about on the net all month, it will show. Personally, I think that's a better system rather than regulating how many hours we can spend online. Sometimes the brain needs a break from all the number crunching.

I watched the internet spread through the firm, they connected us all up without the slightest thought for the consequences, we used to build our own computers and load 3.1 ourselves.
The reactions of the old school managers was hilarious, I spent like a week drawing ren and stimpy pixel by pixel and used it as a screensaver, my line manager walked in with his boss in tow, the sight of a 'CARTOON!' was to much for him and in front of his boss he slapped me across the back of the head.
I didn't take it further because in those days you just got on with each other at a more basic level.

Ofc, this doesn't apply for all, but I think a vast majority of the IT lot are geeks that think they have power, because they can restrict the usage of internet etc :\

Had a similar thing here, don't remember the precise numbers but it was something silly like 10gig a day on farmville, how the fuck the numbers got that high i'll never know.
