Is the Universe (the space I guess I'm talking about) actually infinite, or finite?

Does Infinity actually exist? Or is it just some imaginary number that can be made by dividing 1 by 0?

Just feeling insignificant atm, and finding out if the Universe is actually finite (which I think it is), will be partially comforting.

If the universe isnt infinite, then what do you suggest there is after that? Nothing? If there's nothing it's still infinite, a whole lot of nothing is still something. And if you belive theres a big brick wall at the end of the universe what's on the other side?

I dont see how the universe cant be infinite.

Guess its all about how you believe the Universe was Created.

Either the Big Bang, which would imply that the Universe is Finite, since it has continually been expanding since the bang.

Or the "Steady State" theory, which would suggest that the Universe is infinite

Presume if you keep going in one direction long enough in space you'll arrive back at the same position you started at.... i reckon :p

the big bang theory doesn't exclude it being infinite...

Scientists guess and speculate based on theories so i guess nobody knows or ever will.

In EVE, you can't go through to another space quadrant because there's this "magic" wall there.

So the space isn't infinite becaue there's a pretty rendering at the end and a "magic" wall to stop things from going there.

And we all know EVE is a space simulator based on facts and big f*cking lasers.

This is quite possibly the dumbest question i've read all morning, your feeling insignificant cause you dont know everything about the universe? - if its that big a deal dont come here, try researching it.

Or like your many "I quit" posts do you want us all to rub your belly and say how special you are?

www.google.com

awww poor ame feels insignificant, lets all throw him a party

I do hope this is a bad joke...'cause this is, not even possibly, IS the most insensitive post i've seen. In a long time.

If someone is feling insignificant, and finds a way to express it through some kind of analogy, it's no-ones business to look down upon it.

If you knew Ame from the camlann boards, or even from hib/pryd you'd know his reputation & history as an attention seeking moron & wouldn't care so much!

Think of us as the fish and the universe as the sea , We can only see what is close to us ....

Well thats how i though about it.

Hmm that would mean Teh Seel is our Enemy :eek6:

This might be true, but i'm ont one to judge a person by other people's opinios.

Even still, past does not justify for everlasting hate and prejudice.

Fair enough - however you just defined 'experience' and said it was invalid ;)

On the universe thing, I'm one of those that believes it can't be anything other than infinite. By viewing things as finite you always risk having the question raised of what is on the other side of the finite barrier, and the answer can't be nothing, as there wouldn't be a barrier if there was nothing in the way.

Philosophically it doesn't make a great deal of sense to me that there should be limitations on space, with continual molecular movement - most likely there's either some form or wraparound going on - the space doughnut, or a literally infinite space where clusters gradually spread out more & more...

You must spread some Reputation around before giving it to Bahumat again.

Maybe the univers is finite in a way that when you would head into 1 direction in it you would eventually end up where you started.

But then it would be looped, and in the same way a circular path is, would be considered infinite? That is, if at *any point & facing any direction* if you walked 'forward' for long enough you would end up where you started.

In other words there would be no edge to that universe, therefore with no boundary, it has to be infinite by definition - or am I suffering from a lack of coffee...

Even a donut has boundaries along its sides though.. so what would be outside those? :(

Well that's kinda the crux of the matter - the doughnut is an analogy, to represent what we see as looping of space, it's handy because most people kinda get what you mean.
The analogy's not accurate though, because where a doughnut has edges, if you hit the metaphorical edge of a space/time doughnut you just move to another point on the doughnut - therefore no edges, no true 'shape' either, no boundarys, nothing for us mortals to visualise - which is a bit of a bugger when trying to explain it :)

I definitely think I need a coffee.

If i told you i knew the answer to this, and then proceeded to tell you, would your life be any better? would your life benefit in any way from this knowledge?

Of course not, however it's something to think about while avoiding work.

Kari, the answer is thus.

If the galaxy is infinite then a finite amount of infinity can only be proportional to a finite infinity.

When you are truly in touch with your spam, will you be able to decipher this.
