Hello, well as the title says i'm planning on joining the DAOC community. I've been reading up on the game for about a week now, and sounds great.

Due to some social business, i've come to have abit of time on my hands, and the ricki lake show isn't really a good time killer. So daoc is the next step for me, a few questions if you guys wouldn't mind answering!

Alb or Hi lastonbury server, I plan on gaining L50, joining a decent guild and kicking some a*se in RvR, i can also see myself as a PvE type of person, but what would you say is best for the RvR, non zerging, bit of pve realm? I bet its a hard question, but thats why i came here.

Heretic or Necro for first character? I see necro's are crap in RvR, but really good at cash farming, item farming and so on. So is it advisable to level a necro up (with a buffbott) and gain some decent stuff for a heretic, then level my new char up once i've gained enough cash and items for my tic?

PC Spec, well i've currently got a 512SD Ram, 1600mhz AMD processor, but i'm getting that upto a 1gig ram, keeping the proc and getting the latest Gforce (since my gforce 2 would cause some problems i suppose). How would this run?

Well thanks for your time people, have a good day:)

P.S - The current PC i'm on has restrictions to what sites i can see, does anybody know a good website where i can buy 2x Catas + DR ? (and the other expansions ofc) thanks

here is where you should buy the game

i would defnetly recomend making either a paladin, icewiz, cleric or necro first!
the 3 first if you wanna grp as those are albions main pve grp chars. my most solid answer for a recomended pve & pvp toon will be cleric, there is always a shortage of good healers.
fastest way to lvl 50 solo is with necro+bb then use those 2 to pl a heretic if that is what you want to play.
i think your pc is a bit slowish but it will do fine imo with those upgrades.

I would suggest applying for a free account on the http://daoc.goa.com website. That grants you immediate access to the game, and an account enabled with Classic, SI and TOA.

You get a variety of E-Mails send to you by GOA once you apply for a free account including a special offer from 26th of April till the 23rd of May, which gives you

http://camelot-europe.goa.com/en/index.htm?page=licence

Press the button 'Offers'

You will see Catacombs and Darkness Rising for 19.90 UK Pounds.

It also grants you 14 days of free play, in which you can explorer the game, at no cost.

Regarding realm and classes, necromancers are terribly boring to play. They are a good PvE-tool, but no fun. Heretics seems much more fun, and good solo in PvE atleast, and dont require a buffbot. I can imagine heretics can do well in a group aswell (PvE and RvR-wise) and they are not very expensive to gear up during levelling ---> cloth is quite cheap, and drops arent that uncommon.

Also while a paladin might be cool, dont forget a paladin requires quite good gear (plate-armour) to do well in PVE, and even then its slow.

If you choose to go Hibernia, a variety of classes are available. Enchanters are good in PvE, and good in RvR. Also Valewalkers are a very underrated class, not popular in RvR, but incredibly good in PvE.

I see you already grasped the concept of 2 accounts, which is a major plus in the game, it can speed up your progress by quite abit.

Cool, think i'll try a Paladin and my BB. How long does it take to level solo + bb doing catas etc, i know theres no specific time etc but /played time?

Also i guess 2xPaladins would be good, so is it advisable to find another pally to duo with? Or get a mate to join?

hmm www.play.com works fine for me..

As for how fast you can level, well it depands how well you play the game. But 1-50 with a bb shouldn't take longer than a month these days.

Paladin duo's pretty cool with almost every melee-class. And almost all melee-classes will love to duo with a paladin. Simply because paladin can provide endurance to the group, and allows the tanks to land positionals, as the paladin will grab aggro :)

Paladin-paladin duo works fine, but still kills slow. I levelled with paladin - reaver - buffbot trio and that worked pretty nicely.

Welcome to the community. :)

Out of curiosity, how come you are planning to create characters specificly in the realms you chose?

Good question Azathrim. No special reason, I've read the history of the realms (no biggie), And i've read in depth explanations of all characters, and tbh the selected realms sound the most enjoyable to my liking. Neverless, i may decide to rechange completly because i can't stand the realms i'm in, we'll see!

If you do decide to make a paladin there are a couple of difficult decisions you need to make.

Race/style of play: What do you want you pally to be?

If you want him to be a defensive juggernaut, always using his shield and single hand weapon to outlast opponents (you can slam people with your shield to stun them for 9 secs aswell). Then a high dexterity character is your best bet i.e. saracen placing +10 dex, +10 strength and +10 con or qui at creation. This would be especially recommended if you are going to play glastonbury where shields are much more effective in RvR.

If you want to be a more offensive character (while still retaining the pallies natural defensiveness) then a two hander is your best bet. Choose highlander and go for 10 strength, 10 quickness and 10 constitution at creation. This is especially recommended if you play cluster server as TOA adds some abilities that reduce the effectiveness of being a shield tank.

Choosing briton is really a bob each way. THe other races are marginally better at the duties outlined above but a briton could do either so if you want to change your style of playing for a bit then briton might be the best choice.

Note: Any of the races can do anything I just outlined the strengths of each race, doesnt mean you cant play a saracen with a fucking massive two handed sword :)

Auto-training:

What is it? Some classes have a main spec line, where if you do not train it as you level the server automatically places a minimum training amount into that line for free. For paladins that actually get two autotrain lines - chants and slash.
Effectively what it boils down to is you get free spec points (77 per line) if you dont place any spec points in either of these two lines untill you are level 48. But note these 'free' points are automatically placed in slash and chants so cant be spent elsewhere when deciding on your final spec.

Some do it, some dont. If you like min-maxing your toons then you need to do it. If you are going to solo then i really wouldnt recommend it, paladins level 100 times better with chants than without.

This explanation of auto-training is far from complete so if it has confused you more than helped just ignore it and play the game the way you want. If you are interested in it then do a search around the forums and find out a little more about it before commiting to a long hard levelling slog.

So many drop in cata its not a problem :)

After level 30 the catacombs quests become a really good way of making XP so dont forget about them.

Hello again, a problem. play.com is sold out of the catas bundle, and the price is brilliant, £14.99 for it, £7.99 for DR, is there anywhere else i can get the game box + cd's etc for this price?

If you're planning on dual-logging on that system, forget it...It won't work (or at least, not effectively). Other than that, a Reaver is also a good choice to level up with...You can solo very effectively and you can get groups without much trouble. But if you choice to go with the paladin, your best bet would be a heavy tank to duo with or a tank that can dish out nice damage while you hold aggro (like a Mercenary, Friar, Armsman or Reaver). A pally/pally duo would be a little less effective as you will kill things very slowly.

With 1 gig RAM and a decent PC spec (and connection ofc), you can dual-log for PvE quite ok. However, a second PC or laptop is much more confortable, ESPECIALLY for the post-ding-50 RvR time.

As for classes...
If you want to use a buffbot, you should be aware that as a duo, you´ll occasionally get adds (=two mobs), so you need to be able to handle them.
In my opinion, it´s easier to level a solid solo class (Sorcerer or Necro), then PL the buffbot once your main char is 50. (That way, you´ll also get some more cash because the PL is also a cash farm session). Sorcerers are extremely versatile, complex and fun to play. I can only recommend them.
Join a large, friendly guild on Glastonbury and group with people. Grouped xp is much better than solo, at least in the mid-high level range.

I was dual-logging on an AMD 64 3000+ with 1GB Ram and a Radeon 9800Pro graphic card, even then I couldn't run the game "comfortably"...It worked quite well in windowed mode, in full-screen I could go ld when alt-tabbing and the bot would lag behind most of the time...So I assume it won't work well either on an Athlon 1600+. He's free to try of course, keep in mind to set cpu priority to "background processes" and set the clientsleep mode to background for both clients (in-game type /clientsleep background), helped a lot for me :)
