BBC News - John Galliano anti-Semitic abuse trial opens in Paris
Well he should be done for crimes against fashion, but WTF, He is charged with "public insults based on origin, religious affiliation, race or ethnicity".
You don't need a law against that, he just need his face filling in by those women's husbands.
The guy is freakin cock and they shouldn't big him up with a trial, when did offence become a crime?
Oh yeah, about 20 years ago.

I take offence at children.

Takes all sorts. But you can't "be" offensive.

You can hedge your bets on the assumption that most of the drones and retards that make up the population will take offence at the same things - and you'll probably be right. But you'll probably just make me laugh :)

However:

I thought he was a fashion genius, a good brand, but this is just stupid. Silly man.

I take offence at the thought that you can be a fashion "genius". The very idea shits all over real genius.

Fashion is the archetypal emperors-new-clothes industry and is built on image, nothing more.

Fashion design using art and textiles is like any other art form. His creativity and designs are simply art and in that case like mist other artists.

Piet Mondrian drew simple lines and Jackon Pollock dripped paint like a child, yet they both produced masterpieces.

Art is in the eye if the beholder and clearly not to your taste :).

Dior wouldn't have hired him in the first place if they didn't think he was any good.

In your opinion.

Fashion is an invented hook-in to sell products. It is the foundation of an industry.

In the same way that the Oscars is an industry promotion exercise dressed up as some magical seal of quality the fashion industry is the vacuous intangible something needed to stir up a commercial desire in humans so manufacturers can shift product.

It's why the phrase fashion victim arose. People have fallen victim of the con. People "follow" fashion even though it is a moving goalpoast and an unattainable aspiration. Necessarily so otherwise the manufacturers wouldn't be able to shift their ever changing product line.

It's also why fashion moves in cycles. "That 70's look is back in" - surprise, surprise - there's only so much you can do with clothes so they recycle old designs, add a bit of glitter, pay a famous person to wear or endorse them and hey-presto! stupid humans start paying through the nose for it.

How many cuts of dinner jackets can they do without making you look like a complete tit? Not many eh...

Art, on the other hand, is art and is done for its own sake, whether it's commercial or not. It's not fleeting and exists out of time. It can be in or out of fashion - but it's definiately not fashionable in and of itself.

In my considered opinion :)

I guess what you're talking about is the self-congratulatory commercialised angle of fashion which exists in any art form (The Oscars, The Baftas, whatever the TV one is and even in the land of photography). Galliano started off in fashion and textiles, worked his way up and ended up where he is now.

Whilst I agree you can only 'cut a dinner jacket one way', designers all have to start at the bottom and prove their worth. My mate's fiancé did fashion and textiles at university and she made a line of clothing made out of some rare interwoven threads from a far away place - they are her design, her artwork even if it was "just a jacket".

Oh, and if we're disputing if fashion is art, the Glasgow School of Art run a fashion show every year showcasing their students latest work as part of their Fashion and Textiles course.

I'm not saying you don't have artists who work in the fashion industry G. I'm saying fashion itself cannot be art.

TBH I didn't really want to post 'cause I think my other post already covers the points you make. But wtf eh? :)
