Horrible pay rate :(. That and the screams of oh yes and the mounds of mold make it less appealing.

Firstly I would sign with agencies to get some temp work, you might get lucky and get a few months. Also if you are with the jobcente you should use their resources, ask your adviser for a professional CV to be done that you heard you could go to a training centre for one (this is free, JCP pay for it ) that will really boost your chances, first impression is your CV, shit CV it gets binned, good CV can pretty much get you the job if you have a brain and good at interview. Also use jobcentreplus website for daily job updates in the area, apply to everything, and also ask for local websites I would help but I don't know about gloucestershire. Also ask for best days to get which papers, they all have different days for job adverts but I find they are generally shit.

I worked for a training centre for 4 months and it was my job to work for department for work and pensions and get people jobs so feel free to ask for help if you want anything. If i had the time I would offer to do your CV myself but I dont with work and I'm moving so :(

i'm in the same position, been unemployed since 5th feb. applied for 30+ jobs and still no luck, signed up with 5+ temping agencies no luck. finally had to give in and sign on this monday, felt horrible tbh.

i have a first class degree in illustration, have been employed since i turned 15 and was a manager at my last job for nearly 4 years. i'm 23. i can't see why i'm struggling so much in all honesty. might go for that professional CV thing you suggested mikah though i thought mine was decent enough, but the lack of job offers might be proving me wrong!

I went through this when I graduated guys for 2 months but its all about putting the effort in and knowing some inside tricks. You literally need to apply for 30+ a day, especially if found in papers and on jobcentreplus site think of how many people are in the same position. Signing on is a horrid feeling, I'm a bit of a snob with a lot of pride and you really take a hit doing it but it's got to be done, unfortunately job centre dont put the time in at the mo with people as theres too many they have to go through in this period however you goto use their resources. So many people think their CV's are ok but they really arn't, employers look out for buzzwords, appearance and how well you can sell yourself, little things like personal statements on your CV need to be right at the top and specific to every position! Along with a decent covering letter for each application, they look for certain topics in each paragraph check google on guides. Was random me on the doll getting a job to find others jobs but it helped me and now im going places :p.

With agencies you must ring them at least once a week, every day if you have the bottle. You goto piss these people off so much and prove you are really trying so they get so annoyed they give you something to get you off their back. Also you cant be too picky, industries are struggling so just take the time thinking about what you would accept as work and willing to retrain if necessary.

Go to as many interviews as you can get, even if its a shit job you dont want... "Selling colouring books for blind people? Sure i can come in for an interview"

The more interview you go to the better you get at getting interviewed so when you finaly gets an interview for the job you really want you wont go apeshit and freeze up when they ask you if you want coffee or tea.

Work out-
What do you want to do?
What does your skill set allow you to do? (they're not necessarily the same)

Make sure you CV is a decent format with no spelling mistakes and isn't too long (unless your highly specialised). Make sure it highlights your key skills in at least the last 3 roles you worked in. If you do a personal statement make sure it's at the top of the CV. Also make sure your qualifications (academic and business related) are on the front page. If you've got space on the front page put your key skills on there. The front page is a deal breaker as it's the first thing that they scan read so get the pertinent stuff up front and in their face.

If you've had loads of jobs then only give full details for the last 4 relevant ones with just dates and places for the rest - if they want to know more about those then that's what the interview is for. Also if you've had loads of jobs explain why (I'm a contractor so that's easy for me but if you're not come up with a decent reason for why you left N.B. the boss was a cock isn't a good reason as it makes you look like a trouble maker so put a spin on it - shouldn't have to do this until interview time though).

Never outright lie on the CV. They can check up - but take credit for what you did do and what you could have done if given the chance.

If you're desperate for a job don't just apply for what you've done before - look at what else your skill set can let you do.

Apply for as jobs many as you can if you've got the skills to do them. Use teh internets to find them if you're jobs are advertised that way. There's usually an agency behind the adverts so you're killing two birds with one stone there as even if you don't get the job you're applying for you're getting your cv on their database.

At interview time dress appropriately (i.e. suit and tie isn't appropriate for warehouse work but still go for smart dress. Office work is suit and tie time regardless of their dress code). Be confident but not in your face; if they say that skill a. is vital and you don't have it first try and explain how you could acquire it and then politely ask why they considered you as that isn't on you're cv.

Being an IT bod I don't have the first idea about working in shops (well since I was a wee lad) but off the top of my head I'd say there are transferable skills:

Customer facing - so call centres (spit) and things like that are a possibility.
Responsibility - if you handled cash (and the tills balanced at the end of the day ;) ) then you've got that. On top of that if you ever had to lead shifts then you've some management potential. Not 30k a year stuff but definitely 'I can manage my own time and help others with a view to moving up through the business as time goes by' (don't expect much in the first 3 years unless you're a whizz mind.
Dealt with difficult people and sorted them out without punching them in the face? That's a skill too and useful for either customer facing (internal and external) office work or some sort of support role.

If working in a shop is what you want to do then you'll have to sell yourself pretty hard as there's lots of people out there looking for it. Apply for loads of jobs (as has been said) and make sure that your cv is up to scratch and if you get to the interview point then make sure you mention your skills when there. Mentioning your skills with regards to a situation you've been in is bonus points as it shows you can apply them - try not to always use the last job so it shows you've had the skills for a while and are developing them.

Waffle waffle waffle. I'm sure that most of that's already been covered by the other friendly people here.
