Be intelligent, witty, bright and enthusiastic. If you're none of these things that job will be yours.

Firm handshakes before and after the interview to show you have a good wrist will show the boss' at PC World that you're adequate for the "position" ;) :p

Smile occasionally, speak properly and don't mumble your answers.

Do your hair before the interview (speak to Summo for tips on frayed ends ;) )

Dress reasonably smart, but I would imagine a tie is not needed for a job in a shop such as PC World.

GOOD LUCK!!! :)

It might be stating the obvious but show some degree of knowledge and enthusiasm towards whatever the company is involved in.

A firm handshake can sometimes be a bad thing, take a split second to decide the type of handshake you return. If the interviewer grips firmly, do the same. But if the interviewer takes a loose grip of your hand, dont try to crush their hand.

Look smart. Wear a suit and tie and have clean and polished shoes. First impressions are always the most important

Speak clearly and concisely (sp?)

The most important aspect of working for PC World is having the ability to blag a customer (this worked for me on many an occasion). Take this into the interview and use it when the interviewer asks if you have anything else that you would like to tell them. Make up a small tale (but nothing that can be traced back as a lie) relevant to the position you are applying for, but be very careful about it :D

Lastly, if you get a job at PC World knowing all the technical terms can be a good and bad thing. If you see a nice old lady come in looking for a PC for her grandson's birthday don't throw all the technical terms at her (it is only likely to make her leave the shop and buy elsewhere). But if someone comes in and they are looking for something specific, throw in a smattering of "Jargon". It will impress the customer as you know what you are talking about, therefore they will feel confident about making a purchase.

Most importantly Good luck

I went for a job interview in Game earlier today oddly enough.

I've nearly been up for 24 hours, after 2 hours sleep last night.

SOMEONE PLEASE KILL ME...

;/

:D

PS: They said they'd get back to me before Friday, so I'll expect the "We regret to inform you" talk on the phone within 24 hours :)

Remember : Its not just you trying to impress them into employing you - they're trying to impress you too, and make themselves look good so you want to work for them (its a two way thing)

I'm incredbibly nervous in interviews - but the last i went to the interviewer was more nervous than me (still didn't get offered the job tho') - and a few years ago, I even walked out of an interview when they asked if i'd be willing to cut my hair. They phoned the next day - appologised - and offered me the job (and i had great pleasure in turning them down hehe)

(((Received a 'you've not been short-listed for interview' letter this morning - sigh. )))

Went for an interview myself recently, I was extremely nervous (crapping myself to be honest) but went in, tried to be a confident as I could, and walked out with the job. If I can do it anyone can, it was my first proper interview for over 10 yrs.
Tip :
A. Be confident.
B. Get a bit of background knowledge abt the place you are hoping to work for.

Good luck

Although my latest employment is over 8 years old, the previous 10+ years in IT have seen me through many jobs and many more interviews.

The only advice I can really give which applies to any interview, is "show confidence", in fact you need to be oozing confidence and the one thing that often destroys confidence is thinking you really need the job (even if you do).

Need leads to desire, desire needs to fear, fear leads to anger, anger leads to hate, the dark side will be upon you (although you're halfway there anyway with PCWorld).

My current job interview was won mainly because a good mate of mine who is self-employed, told me he'd send some work my way if I didn't get the job, consequently my confidence soared as I realised I didn't actually _need_ the job, and I got it !

Sounds crazy but it works.

1. Dont name drop
2. simple concise answers to questions which show you understand what you are talking about (even if you dont)
3. Look the interviewer in the eye
4. Dont be distracted.
5. Dont talk too much / too little
6. Dont fidget
7. Dont boast.
8. Dont just answer questions - ask some of your own
9. Be polite and presentable.

Used to do the interviewer thingy - these are some of the main points we looked out for

Slightly ambiguous, but if you follow Lazs other points you should be ok.

I didn't even get interviewed for my job, they just gave me it. Therefore, I'm not the person to ask so I have no idea why I'm posting in this thread...

Oh dear.

hmmm good points laz, only when i read that did i realise i've done most of that stuff in the past :)

if i make lots of eye contact with the interviewer i feel like i'm staring and consequently look away, suppose i could imporve that a bit...

i'm a mean fidgeter too, twiddling fingers and all that shit, coz i'm nervous as fuck :)

also, this is my 2nd interview for the position, its a new store so they get loads of peeps applying, i got throught the first round of nobheads so i'm not doing too bad. There is also going to be a 'technical test' in this interview seing as its for a techies position, hopefully it'll be somthing really simple. i have no doubt in my ability to fix shit, just i'm worried i might fuck up coz of the pressure.

ah well, fingers crossed, 2 hours to go :>

Nothing ambiguos .....

To explain to the uneducated :p

Dont use simple monosyllabic answers (e.g. "yes" / "no")

On the other hand, dont "blabber" for 1/2 hour on a relatively simple topic

btw - GL Mookie

good luck mookie

my thoughts and prayers go with you :)

i myself have an interview @ 10am tomorrow :(

what's more it's for a job i don't really like the sound of, but the job centre's making me go... i've been unemployed all of a week and they're nagging me already. cunts.

oh well i'll survive all subsequent interviews as i've been unemployed before and survived many interviews, been offered many jobs, and turned lots down :)

as above;

be smart, speak clearly, eye contact is good, no fidgeting, show interest in what they do and ask questions - don't ask how much money it's gonna be... ask something like "what are the opportunities for career advancement?"

hmm spose that's it really?

good luck you. good luck me :(

I remember when I did my PC World interview we spent 10 minutes arguing how Ultima Online (I was a player) was better/worse than EverQuest (he played) :)

And reporting peeps to the cops for having oh so naughty files on their hd's.

Ever since the Glitter incident I refuse to shop there, like I needed an excuse? :)
I'm not defending Glitter, but what if he had sensitive business files or similar? They had no right to be looking, or to report him. I seem to remember that shortly after that a newsreader was reported by Boots for taking pics of her child in the bath. sheesh.

Good luck with the interview btw. Just tell them you have fuck all knowledge of PC's, can easily get acne, have no personality, don't really want to be there, and the job will be yours :)

when you walk out at the end, dont say "i 'hope' to hear from you soon", say "i 'look forward' to hearing from you soon" something i learnt before (in a day that was all about interview techniques) which shows your confident you can get the job.

First, in the instance of Glitter, I suspect the police knew about him already and waited for their chance. With the sheer amount of data that passes through repair departments like PCWorld it is highly unlikely they examine every single one.

Secondly, the Boots situation, this is standard procedure for photography labs. Unlike HDD's, almost every photo is examined for quality anyway, and the technicians are required by law to report any suspicious stuff. You might call this incident overzealous but it certainly isn't "big brother", it's been going on for years and the main reason Polaroid never went out of business.

There was recently a documentary on this subject. The police had no clue, nothing new there then. Although he had been a practising pedo for many years, including raping his daughters best friend, there had been no evidence to alert the police. It was only once the PCW incident happened that "victims" started coming forward. What PCW did was unprompted, and remains imo very wrong. What if he had nude pics of his wife/girlfriend? Is it OK for PCW to trawl through his PC for their wanking material? I suspect that some fuckwit PCW acne ridden techie was just being nosey. It is highly unlikely that his broken PC was likely to be fixed by looking in non system folders or his temp IE files. Even a system clean up would not require viewing of files.
Polaroid haven't gone out of business because guys want nude pics of their wives, and don't want the fotoshop seeing them, so I'm told :) That and the fact that for some years it was very good technology, saving the days it took to get pics developed.
