I emailed this to news@bw, but it didn't get posted - so I'm going to post it here:

Looking for some extra cash to see you through the Christmas period but don't want to leave the house?

AlienPants is looking for enthusiastic and responsible people with good language skills to provide game-related SMS chat moderation for a well-known client. Working from home, you must be reliable, have access to Sky Satellite TV (not NTL or other cable) and a good internet connection.

We are also interested in articulate and well-presented gamers who want to become "Game Gurus", chat moderators who will appear live on TV via Webcam.

In return we promise good pay and negotiable working hours to suit you. No experience necessary - full training given.

Email to hr@alienpants.com for more information.
--end--

Yes, this is PAID work - the kind wher you do something on your computer from home and you get money paid to you. It's working for AlienPants, a company formed from the content team behind the original BarrysWorld, and it involves working - albeit peripherlly - on UK television. Use the email above, it'd be nice to be able to employ some more people.

It's not like it's a proper job. It doesn't matter how fancy you make the ad, it still won't be all it's cracked up to be.

But it is...

It's not like it's some dodgy bit of work down a back alley - it's public facing, quite challenging and involves adhering to some rather stringent government regulations. And at least two people currently working on it have this as their only employment.

If it wasn't for the SkyTV bit, I'd be having a good look at it. Getting any sort of experience working in online gaming is hard to get.

No way it can been done using a proper internet connection? I'm very qualified.;)

How do you propose to get a crappy, grainy image from a £99 webcam to broadcast quality TV?

Sounds like it.. reason it's Sky-only is that the cable co's wont take a pile of toss that is 'Game Network'.

*hopes AP haven't sunk that low*

The reason it will be Sky only is that the Digital TV interactive is a closed platform, and most companies will launch one at a time. So Sky first, then Telewest/NTL is the normal way to do it.

Sounds interesting cro.

Is it a full time job?

Yes.

yes, we know :)

For the entire time we have been working on the moderation for the Game Network, we have managed to create a sense of community and a sense of place *in spite of* the Game Network :) We're also working hard with them to try and improve the general quality of the channel - and before you ask, no we did not and DO not have ANYTHING to do with the program running from 11pm.

*hopes AP haven't sunk that low*
Huh? Wha? We're providing world-class community management oddly enough - not our fault the channels crap :) See above :)

Is it a full time job?
No, only casual sorry. We do have a couple of people who are effectively working full-time on it, but they are still under casual rates.

How do you propose to get a crappy, grainy image from a £99 webcam to broadcast quality TV?
Using Windows Media Encoder, the MPEG ISO4 codec, a max size of 160x120, and a hardware scan converter to fit the "crappy grainy image" into the "tiny box on one side" where the image is supposed to go. You didn't think we were gonna be doing it full-screen?

cro

PS - thanks to everyone who's applied so far - I'll be emailing you all shortly.

Sounds like a decent part-time job for someone. I'd apply myself but I don't think my age would fit the Game Network demographics :)
