When I say Jet Li surpasses Jackie Chan I did mean in martial arts mainly which he does, Jet Li pisses on Jackie Chan from a great height in the fighting department. But its my opinion in the acting too.
Jackie Chan has done some abysmal films in the past, a lot of which I can't remember the name of. But it seems his fighting style is very clumsy, he seems to take as much as he gives which makes the fight scenes in his films unrealistic.
As already pointed out Jet Li uses a different style with every films he makes, he managed to use 2 styles in the one. And on his acting talent, I see him as a very focused man aware of his surroundings and considering he has only been speaking English for 4 or 5 years I think he does act quite well.

Did you know he was first choice for Chow Yun Fat's character (I know how to pronounce it but not spell it) in crouching tiger hidden dragon.

Theres another, Chow Yun Fat, dicuss.

They weren't the same film, Operation Condor was the sequel, which wasn't as good as the orginal i thought.

Films are not just about the quality of acting or visual effects etc. It is an ensemble, Dre had very few lines, however he delivered them accordingly. If another black actor say, Will Smith played the character it would have lost credibility with the audience. That will lose you money as a director or producer. I know what I'm conversing about due to the fact I have two, count them one, two high grade qualifications in film and media. Considering Dre's main fortay is music I believe this was a good debut, better to be a master at one than a jack of all trades. Like Britney Spears who is an average singer and actor. I do believe I know very well what I am talking about, especially against some one who voices an opinion and can't justify it, an armchair critic who can cast dispersions but when it came to the crunch could not do any better, infact make a complete hash.

For someone with two major qualifications in film, I'd expect your ghetto friend to check a film called Set it Off, Mr Young's acting debut, not as he seems to believe Training Day. Still, why be correct when you can be condescending?

Chan pisses on Li from a great height. He's been acting a damn sight longer than Li, - Chan's been at it for 40 years, since before Li was even born in fact.

As for CT:HD, Li would have been the wrong choice for that role, Fat was the correct choice - the film proved that.

Not that Li isn't good, he's a great martial artist. But Chan is better imo. And I think he's a better actor too - at least Chan can portray a range of believable emotions, whereas Li can portray a man in need of a serious shit fairly convincingly. But little else.

I totally agree with Sar here.

Jet Li as an actor sucks. I think I mentioned earlier that he is even crap in his native language films. Where he does excel is in the ass kicking bit but he does rely an awful lot on wires and special effects these days (fucking Hollywood studios), whereas Jackie is still very much old school martial arts (tell the stunt men to piss-off).

Chow Yun Fat was the perfect choice for CTHD. It needed a more mature and respected actor to play a more mature and respected character. Jet Li would never bring that to it in a million years.

Chow is also the *coolest* Hong Kong actor ever BTW.

Um, surely if you were fighting ten people at once, you'd get six, maybe seven shades of shit knocked out of you.. hence him taking a battering is quite realistic I'd say..

And if anyone is in any doubt about his fighting skills, have a look at some early stuff like drunken master. Oh, and Gorgeous has a brilliant fight scene at the end, one on one, him against one of his stunt men (world class tkd'er iirc), and it looks very real. Very cool.

I don't care what anyone says but comedy and martial arts do not mix, admittely I haven't seen any of Chan's earlier films as his acting just doesn't appeal to me, but his later stuff that I've seen flicking through the channels on sky just seems crap and second rate with him trying to make it funny.
Guns an martial arts do mix however which is why blade and the matrix really appeal to the likes of us, there should be more of these.

And Nath I agree if you do get a group of people attacking you yes you will get the shit kicked out of you, having the shit kicked out of you tends to remove the will to fight back so whenever jackie gets punched why is it he can return the same move and knock someone unconcious without suffering even a bruise himself.

That's the whole *point* of Jackie Chan films though? His fights are supposed to look funny, that's why he uses so many props and dives all over the place. They're not supposed to be realistic renditions of an actual fight (tbh I've never seen a realistic rendition of an actual fight anyway, given that they usually finish in less than 10 seconds and almost always go to the floor), and it's all tongue in cheek. In fact, that's *exactly* where Jet Li type films go wrong - they take themselves too seriously, so when he does something utterly ridiculous like spinning 1440 degrees through the air it's crap.

Calling Jackie Chan a "fat acrobat" is fairly fucking dense though, given that he's reached master level in hapkido, wushu, drunken boxing, and northern praying mantis kung fu.

Jackie Chan truely is a l33tl0rd, Jet Li is up and coming and is also very good, but Chan is out of his league. They are both different and shouldnt be compared, but if you want to compare them then I'd say Jackie is the superior

Jackie Chan is a great kung fu chap. Very funny films and some superb pieces of kung fu (martial arts. no idea if it is kung fu) seen about all his films and I loved them all.

I watch films to be entertained, and if that includes some MA action then fine.

I dunno the kick he did in Lethal Weapon 4 when he kicked someone standing right behind him in the face was pretty special.

Jet Li is my favourite. If he couldn't kick his way free, I'd keep him in a little box in the spare room.

Jackie Chan is now too firmly routed in his Trademark Chan-ness, and so you can't really rate him as an actor anymore. He's turned into the oriental version of what Will Smith started out as; the affable slightly comedic good guy, but with the added edge of nice kickey skills. Jet Li may not flourish at the emotional range, but when you watch films like Once Upon A Time In China, and then see him in Lethal Weapon Four, at least he can present a different persona. I actually quite rate him in Once Upon A Time In China.

Thats not to say I don't rate Jackie - how can you not be impressed by the smiley button nosed spritely man? Quite a few of his films are total drivel though ("WHOOOOOO AMMMMMM IIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII?") and the only thing that makes them watchable are the fight scenes. Jackie is first and foremost an entertainer, and I think the edge that both Bruce and Jet have over him is the predatory feel.

Did any of you know Jackie Chan has turned down the roles of bad guys in demolition man and lethal weapon 4 because he doesn't want to be seen as the bad guy, thats the attitude of a lamer if ever I heard one.

or maybe just the attitude of someone who wants to entertain. Both Demolition Man and Lethal Weapon 4 were before he "hit it big" in the west - he got offered loads of trademark "scowling 2 liner bad guy generic martial artist that comes to a grisly death" type roles, and turned them down repeatedly, preferring to wait until he didn't have to rely on hollywood schtick.
