Yeah Teeds, If the 9800 XT is still up at the £300 mark, what will these retail at. Must be around the £450 mark.

$399 already quoted by best buy, heh, have a look on lastminute.com and you can probably get a flight AND a 6800 Ultra for less than a card alone in Europe ;)

Oh, yeah, and they rawk ;)

Any idea when these will become available in the UK? I Dont care about the price that performance is just amazing means 60+ FPS near enough all the time in all FPS's even Farcry ... and hopefully should remove some of the bottleneck that X2 has at times in big fights...

I'm not going to shell out until I see some rigourous benchies and R420 comparisons. Additionally, I'm not sure a better card will give me any more fulfillment - I play BF1942 at 75 fps (vsync on), by upgrading i'll be running BF1942 at .... 75 fps ....

Doom3, HL2 and Stalker will be the crunch games.

I predict that 3 weeks after the release of that card, a game comes out that totally owns it, and requires a new video card.

So that will be HL2 then? With all new super gfx effects that they have spent the last 8 months doing :/

ATI added more pipelines to their new card after it narroly underperformed against the nv40. So it should be very intresting to see who comes out on top when both cards launch.

but the image quality in the shader dept is not as good as the xt tho ... they still have some work to do before they release it it seems.

The image quality of the 6800 Ultra bothers me, if it means an R420 at 100 fps with decent quality over the 6800 Ultra with poop quality at 130 fps - I'll be going ATI for the second upgrade running.

Picture quality means a lot to me, i'm not interested in turning everything off and lording about the fps.

my thoughts exactly. I currently have a 9700pro and am quite pleased with it. Before that I had nvidia's 4600ti. If the 9800 delivers loads of power with a downside of mediocre image quality I shan't be getting it. simple.

9800?

That is a 9700 basically?

Im waiting until the X800 is out. ATI always seem to come through with NVidia beateres lately.

the 5950's have even worse picture quality looking at the results on the toms hardware guide test .. I would stick with the 9800 pro or xt atm depending on what ati's response is

Now is the time to wait and see. It would be folly to buy a card at the moment. The release of the 6800 isn't going to affect previous hardware prices here for another month or so. Best budget buys are going to be the 9800 Pros (most of which will OC to XT levels) and the 5900 Ultras.

That said, I too had to scrape my jaw off the ground after reading some of those numbers, even if the cacky shader quality furthers this worrying trend we're seeing from nVidia.

The shaders looked pretty good on the Unreal3 demo :)

The only image quality problems I've noticed are the strange banding effects on the tail of that plane in the FS article. The new AA looks shit-hot too.

Ok, I'll use small words so you'll be sure to understand ;)

Take a look at the screenshots on the THG review. nVidia seem to be making a habit of trading visual quality for bigger frame rates. They got panned for this a while back when they made their drivers look out for particular executables such as 3dmark and quake3, and activating what they called "Optimisations". (Although I seem to remember ATI being guilty of similar acts in the past)

It was widely criticised as a cheap attempt to score higher benchmark numbers at the expense of image integrity.
This seems to be a more generalised move, but there's a clear loss of quality in Far Cry compared to the ATI card.

I think this is what Gabe Newell was getting at when he criticised nVidia's codepath and DX9 compliance.

The 6800 still looks like a stunning card and it would be hard to believe that Forceware 60 series drivers still wouldn't be fully compliant, but the shots from the THG review are a bit worrying.
