The secondary school I went to, all 5th years had to go for a weekend away to a place just like that called Castlerigg. Im sure some others on here have been. It was the worst 3 days of my life. We had to go walking up massive hills whilst singing Jesus songs. To make it worse, a local shop keeper grassed on a few of us who tried to buy some cheap cider. We all had to spend 3 hours listening to why alcohol is bad and leads you into a life of crime, whilst everyone else had the only non-jesus day trip to lightwater valley.

Early age religious indoctrination is nothing new.
It begins when children are 5 years old in usa. Now don't blame the school - while they may have more enthusiasm for the task than is warranted, they are obliged by law to peddle a 'broadly christian' doctrine. The governors have the power to determine questions of doctrine !, but the chair of governors is an employee of the local christian church, so do not expect any joy from them.
Everybody should be free to make informed choices about religion, and this attempt by Christians to get them young is an attempt to interfere with this choice.
Children need to learn to take moral responsibility for their actions, not to have moral decisions made for them by books and preachers. Even more astonishing is the trend towards more church involvement in schools.
Is Religious Indoctrination Child Abuse? I say YES!

It is really scary, I'm just glad that I live in the UK, where you don't get stuff like that forced down your throat. Unfortunately the film isn't planned for a UK release >_< which sucks as I really wanted to see it.

I agree with Joor that indocrinating children is a for of abuse, children should be given impartial information about all religions, and let them make up their own minds what they believe.

If you want it or not, you teach your children something, so obviously if you're christian, you will teach them in christian ways, there's nothing wrong about it. I was raised in a christian home, had some christian friends, some weren't.

I also don't see anything bad in "Jesus Camps" or however you wanna call it, as long as it stays in normal measures. Lots of the stuff in the vid is stuff you'd do with every kind of children on a camp, music, games, etc. It's also sure that you will try to get over a christian message with that.

So the only thing I can't approve of is to try and permanently force children to do things. You know, I wasn't always happy to go to church, but my parents tagged me along, ofc. I don't think there was something wrong with that cause if at older age I had made my mind up to do what I want, I could've done so without them buggering me all day long.

It's all about the position to what you believe and how you teach it to your kid. Enforce it and hammer it in and the child will hate it and will feel abused for being forced. You know I had tons of fun when I was younger and I still have contact with some of my mates - well those who stayed in the area.

Yes the US is going hard on the topic, but let's face it, it's a christian country so they will ofc try to bring that over to their children. Would you say that japan is an extreme country cause their religion is present at lots of places?

You also have to admit that people are different from country to country. In German people sit in church and are quiet, end of story. In Africa for instance, people dance around and make loud music. It's a bit the same in the US, people have a "louder" way of expressing themselves and you cannot condemn them for doing so. Cultural differences give lots of room for misunderstandings.

Sure, we gotta be careful about what we trust and what not, but we also need to be careful not to jump the bandwagon too quickly. I'm not saying christian extremism doesn't exist, but I still think we should be careful about what scale we use when measuring other things. If people posted about an islam camp, others would scream terrorist indoctrination, yet nobody would give a shit if I posted a link of a Karate camp, which is a lot about religious belief aswell =)

thats a stupid argument, its not how representive it is, its about the manners. Look at the vid, listen to what they say, read about the religious fanatics in US etc. etc. and then, do the same about Japan. Their religion is built on different things than christianity (fortunatly for the japanese). Religion isnt something i adore, but i respect peoples beliefs if they are moderate and not extreme. Those are extreme, and i dont support them.

I think 3/4 of that showed a fairly energetic, but ok christian camp. I dont see anything wrong with bringing your children up in your beliefs, given that they can make the choice to believe in it or not at any point. But also, I cant help but feel that some of the footage towards the end was just to get people interested (Like all about war stuff). But then again, I have watched some extremeist chrisitan video clips from America... they do for the vast majority of Chrisitans, what muslim terrorist do for the peaceful people who follow Islam.

But, I did cringe when the wife was talking about Muslim camps putting grenades in the hands of children... I'd agree that saying stuff like that is just asking for trouble back. Anyone know exactly what the film is about?

That's really fucking disturbing. particularly the part where, not long after the fat bitch goes "Oh those kids in Palestine go to camps just like you and they put hand grenades in their hands" this guy asks a room full of kids "How many of you want to be those that would give up their lives for Jesus?"...

A few points:
1. Not every religious person is a fundamentalist.

2. There's a difference between thinking you're right and thinking you're better. Although the two often go hand in hand, this isn't always the case. Also: religion is an acquired something, whereas race is something you're born with. Religion is a choice, which means that it says something about who you are and that you can choose to adopt it or not. This is not the case with race.

3. Doesn't everyone think they're right and the others are wrong? How can you hold an opinion if you think you're wrong and the others are right? You can argue that all points of view are equally valuable (and thus neither is better or right or wrong), but that's nonsense. Practically nobody thinks like that.

No mention in all the mainstream religions there wasnt dinosaurs either
Also scientist have been wrong countless times, but i dont see you ignoring everything you believe to be true through someone elses discovieries because they once through the world was flat.

This ignoring the fact the most theories, exactly what they are.. theories are just as fragile as following a religion.
As the majority of things are not 100% conclusive, just backed by a majority so you are pretty much doing the same thing by putting "faith" into peoples findings

No they just beleive in something that doesnt exist and cannot be proven, and they make decisions based on this "Faith". Some people of Faith become very powerfull and make decisions that affect the rest of us. It's a joke, really, one big fucking joke.

You beleive in UFO's, your a nut. You believe in ghost, your a nut.

But yet it's perfectly normal and acceptable to beleive in a GOD? wtf and not only that you are not even allowed to question peoples beliefs in GOD without taking some seriouse ammount of hassle and in the case of some religions you can expect to be killed for questioning the existence of GOD.

WTF!!!

thats not strictly true nowdays :p
its a realisic probablility that taken the size of the universe there is extra-terestrial life.
The main factor is however is there intelligent life out there as there is almost certainly living organisms

As an answer to Mojo: That depends a bit. Faith, as I perceive it, has a wide range of variations: from ID, to a God which intervenes with every action; faith as a source of morale, etc.

Religion and science are two different domains and neither can say anything sensible about the other. I read an article not too long ago, about the metaphysical aspirations of faith, which the author claimed to be the source of the conflict. I believe this is true, since these metaphysical aspirations make faith claim things which actually aren't within it's domain. When a religious fundamentalist denies that the sun is the middle of the universe, for example.

The question to be asked then is: Is faith possible without these metaphysical aspirations? I don't believe it is, but I think a compromise is possible. At the moment, science is not capable of explaining everything and I don't think it ever will be. This leaves a limited room for faith to fulfill it's metaphysical aspirations (God of the gaps). The most known example of this is probably ID.

Note: I do not say that the gaps in scientific knowledge prove the existence of a god. I merely say that until science comes with an explanation, there is no need to dismiss the religious explanation as wrong.
