I've heard JK2's floating around the net now, don't suppose anyone's managed to get hold of it and play it?

I'm not a Star Wars fan but this games does look rather spinky. Love the multiple light-sabre moves in the video and the ability to throw it at walls, watch it bounce around then return to your hand.

I'm keeping an eye out for the demo.

cant really trust magazine reviews though...

they have to keep the publishers and developers sweet, or they wont get 'exclusives' anymore

well id like to have proof that these magazines are totally independent and/or free of bias

the only person's view you can totally accept is your own

But I don't want to have to write a review for myself to persuade me to buy the game I've just bought in order to review it.

:/

That it did indeed. :)

Daf why do you need proof that these mags are innocent? Shouldn't the burden of proof lie with you to prove that they're corrupt?

Innocent before proven guilty and all that. It's all very well spouting that mags give shit games glowing reviews in return for backhanders (what, just to be "contraversial"?), but lets face it, most mags would lose out in the long-term if they consistently review bad games as good.

Sure if a certain mag was on the backhanders tip then they "may" get some exclusives, but when no-one trusts their reviews then it's very much a moot point.

I think the worst thing that happens is that a reviewer really enjoys a game that most people consider to be average - Serious Sam 2 for instance (as well as its predecessor). I loved both those games and still have both installed, but most people just don't "get" the games premise because most are too young to appreciate the angle Croteam are approaching the FPS genre from.

Were I to write a review for SS2 I would give it about 84%, whereas most players would probably knock between 10 & 20 % off that score.

Ditto Baldurs Gate 2 - I absolutely adore that game and would review it in the mid 90's, but someone who doesn't appreciate a long term game such as this would review it far far below the score I would give it.

So I say to you - Where's YOUR proof?

I wouldnt trust the magazines word for word. They are good for previews and seeing screenies (and reading on the loo) but the publishers that do the best junkets always get the best reviews. Generally they wont give good marks to a really shit game, but they will overmark hyped up titles ;) Who remembers 437437 magazines coverpaging Rise of the Robots then ? :)

Had a m8 who worked for a music magazine, he actually was told by the editor to give good reviews to shite kit or they wouldnt send any more review machines. I wouldnt be suprised if the same principles apply in any part of the industry.

The only problem with magazine reviews is they are often so far ahead of the game release that they often never use the retail version, a lot of games have had features cut or re-done by the time it hits the shelves, whether this is the fault of the "naive" magazine or the sneaky developer is debateable.

I remember PC Format, whilst not the best gaming mag ever, did take a stand on reviewing games whilst they were still in development, they lost out on quite a few "exclusives" because of that (I was getting another gaming mag at the time too), I still get the magazine because their reviews are accurate and consistant.

Consider Quake III Arena, a game that most of the FPS community saw way back as a "test" version, and we got impressed, but when you consider the tweaks and remodelling that got done along the way, plus features that never got included until the last moment (like the Grenade Launcher), could any of us have done an accurate report on the retail version ?

IIRC a lot of magazines did junk Rise of the Robots, to be fair, but I'd still like to see an example of a praiseworthy score being given to a truely sh*t game before I start considering that backhanders were involved.

I wouldn't put it past gaming companies to give magazines first look exclusives if they write good reviews, so maybe they put pressure on the magazines to give good scores. I recall the situation with Dr Tom Pabst and his consistant slating of 3dfx products to the point where they refused to send him any more production samples.
